Fatal Error - even after reinstalling

Featured Replies

HiI've run out of ideas :( FSX crashed yesterday and since then every time I launch it it returns a Fatal Error. I cleaned out my registry, just in case that was causing it. In desperation I've just completely uninstalled FSX and reinstalled, re-registered but it's still happening :( What could be causing this? If anyone could help me back to running the program I'd be very grateful.ThanksDel

Agree with VGBaron. Need more info. Did you check the Event Viewer to see exactly what was causing the crashes? When you uninstalled/reinstalled FSX, did you clean out all the directories after the uninstall as FSX does not delete everything and leaves files on your system. When you installed, did you disable the User Access Controls (UAC)? Sometimes these controls prevent the proper installation of programs. The same rules apply for anti-virus programs. I suggest you disable them until FSX has been installed. Finally, before uninstalling FSX and reinstalling it, you should always delete or rename the FSX.cfg first, restart FSX and let the config rebuild itself. This has solved a lot of FSX problems. Did you install SP1 and SP2 and/or Acceleration after you reinstalled FSX? In the future, if rebuilding the FSX.cfg does not fix the problem, try reinserting the FSX disks and running a repair. Just remember you have to repair SP1 and SP2 too!Best regards,Jim

Thanks guys. I'd already tried the config deletion option and running a repair. OK, I've now tried what you suggested Jim:Switched off anti-virus, switched off UAC, deleted everything I could find related to FSX directories - then made a fresh installation (even chose a different directory) but it's still reporting a fatal error when I launch it. I've tried it with and without the SP updates. Additionally, I reverted to a system restore point where I knew for sure when it was working, but that hasn't helped either. My system is:ACER Aspire M7711Windows Vista Home Premium 64Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz4GB RAMI haven't made any modifications to the system and no add-ons were installed after the re-installing of FSX... it's happening "straight out of the the box". It runs through "Completing setup...", then "Building database for new scenery files...", continues for about 2 or 3 more seconds then reports the fatal error.I've never used Event Viewer before and it looks a good tool, if not a bit baffling to a non-techie like me. However, I've spotted that in the Administrative Events window it's reporting an error on each of the times I've tried to run FSX in the last day or so:Faulting application fsx.exe, version 10.0.60905.0, time stamp 0x44fd0a92, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03824, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00060c78, process id 0x11f4, application start time 0x01cb75b8c1e9e6ae.Maybe that module is the problem? If so, any ideas where I get it from to download - I can't seem to find it on the MS site. Or any other advice?CheersDel

I have been having exactly the same type of error in FS9, but ONLY with the PMDG 747-400, and only after a certain length of time after the sim loaded. The sim would simpyl crash on me after some time, depending on scenery complexity. However, ntdll.dll is sometimes mentioned as being the culprit. It is a Windows DLL and has nothing to do with FS itself. I'm sorry that I cna;t help, but know that you are not the only one with this error.

ntdll errors are a very broad range of errors. Suggest you google ntdll errors and start the process of determining what is causing your issue. It could be software, hardware, driver or a combo of these. You need to troubleshoot a bit more. I'd start with a clean boot - the absolute minimum you need to run fsx - see if it does anything. If it's ok, start adding back services one at a time and testing.Vic

Remember, it might take a week for a fault to appear again,so thoroughly test each new addon, don't be tempted toadd 3 or 4 new ones, the same day!Peter Sydney Australia

You might want to..Run a disk diagnostic ( read all sectors )...Run sfc /scannow with your windows install disk...Read your event logs ...

Hi GuysJust spent the guts of a full day searching for potential remedies for this. Bought and ran a more powerful registry and system cleaner - no joy. Disabled Catalyst Control Center as some people had found that to be a problem - no joy. Tried another reinstall under a new account - no joy. Tried a host of different settings and even with all services but the basics running - still no joy. I gave up and resigned myself to having to do a complete Windows re-install, but decided to sync my MP3 first. I decided to give FSX one last try after that and hey presto! it's launching now!!! Figured out what the problem is. I have Plantronics wireless headphones with a USB transmitter which was plugged in but removed it to sync the MP3 (normally I use the headphones for Skype on my Mac, but connected to the PC a few days ago to listen to some music and forgot to put it back in the Mac). Turns out this is the culprit... weird but so simple once it's known. Thanks all for your suggestions guys. Now, time to reinstall all the add-ons and start flying again :(
