FSX on SSD drive + raid setup

Featured Replies

How much faster/better would flight sim run if installed on a dedicated 120 gig SSD drive along with a 2 drive raid(1) mirror setup for all other programs? Or would it be better to do I raid(10) mirror + stripe with 4 hard drives? I want raid mainly for redundancy/backup for other software. Thanks in advance.

I am running the OS on the SSD and FSX+addons on a RAID0 config. I noticed improvement loading from the RAID 0 but honestly, I am going to purchase a second SSD because I am VERY impressed with how responsive the OS is currently.

If you are planning on using software (BIOS) RAID - you will not gain anything with FSX. If you plan on using a dedicated RAID controller where you can adjust the stripe size, you will get some gain. The quesiton re SSD is not whether you will get any increase in performance but rather is the little you get worth the $$ you spend. So far, conventional wisom says no. For the OS, faster load times ats are great but unless you use TONS of photoreal scenery you will gain little from FSX in practice using an SSD drive. Better off with a Vrap mechanical drive. - larger, almost as fast and way cheaper.Vic

Thanks for the info, what do you mean by Vrap drive --- WD Velociraptor???? and would a Seagate momentus with the hybrid SSD on it be any faster?
