November 6, 201015 yr HiI switched my pc on today and it failed to post. So I restarted and got the message saying my over clock had failed. I've had my pc running for just under twelve months and it's been stable all the time. My pc is as followsI7 920 @4ghzAsus P6TDv26gb ddr3Gtx 285I ran occt and the clock was over heating pretty much instantly. I tried stepping the clock down to 3.80ghz but it was just as unstable. I have now returned the CPU back to it's stock settings and was just wandering what the next logical step would be? I have been debating on upgrading to the 980x but it's a lot of money and with the sandy bridge processors due out soon I don't know whether to hold out and get the 980x when those new processors are out.Any help is gratefully appreciated Thanks Gavin Price

November 6, 201015 yr Is VPro the official name for the sandy bridge processors then.I would hold out and see what the sandy bridge line has to offer at least. As for your PC now, there could be so many things, but if it's overheating with OCCT, I would check your cooling block, did something change or come loose, did you move it or bump it recently?

To be honest, this is my first ever computer build and I don't know an awful lot but wasn't sure how often you need to re-apply the thermal compound to the processor. I'll try re-doing that and giving the machine a good clean. Gavin Price
November 7, 201015 yr Author Just in case anyone wondered. I took my CPU cooler out and cleaned out all the dust (there was a lot) and removed the old conpound abd re-applied it. I then changed the direction of the CPU fan so that it was facing the top case fan on my Antec 900 case. All this resolved the over heating issue and Im now stable again at 4ghz.Thanks Gavin Price
