Is the 9800 Pro the Way to Go??

Featured Replies

I have a Gateway 700x P4 2.8 ghz. with 1024 meg ram, and a 128mb GeForce 4 Ti-4600G card. After getting FS9, I tweaked settings down to about mid range for sliders, cut AI traffic down to about 50%, and reduced resolution to 800x600x32. I also go back and forth between simple and 3d clouds when fps starts dropping into the high singles. Overall, I'm getting 15 - 20 fps but at times hits 8 or 9. It's bearable, but I'd like to get some addon planes such as The PMDG 737 and want fluid flight and not a slide show. I don't know what else to set or tweak, but it was suggested that I move up to a Radeon 9800 pro "the best for FS9". If it gives a consistent 30 fps with all sliders maxed out as I hear it does that's just what I'll do. However, I see on the forum here that the driver/flickering issue is quite a headache and confusing. Is this issue easy to rectify and if so, where do I get the problem solving drivers? Are they easy to install? Thanks. :-)

The new omega drivers eliminate the flickering. Works great. I LOVE the 9800 pro.

What kind of framerates are you getting and are your sliders all maxed out or not? Where can I get the drivers and are they easy to install??

flaps 30. just do a quick seach for omega drivers under this particular forum. they posted the link the other day

Before you go and spend a lot of money.. you might consider further tuning your current config..You should be able to fly at 25 fps solid (except for heavy clouds)at 1280x960x32 resolution with 2xAA and 4xAF..I'm happily flying the PMDG 737NG on a P4-2.8 and a 128 meg Ti4200,so you should be able to as well with a Ti4600 which is faster!..or is the 4600G model a slower card than the original Ti4600?

Bert

Bert. I'm not sure as to the speed of the 4600G vs the 4600, but could you please give me the step by step on how to tune the config? I am not too familiar with what needs to be tuned or how to do it. I am familiar with where the FS9 and display configs are located, but that's it. Thanks. tom

Tom, it is somewhat of a laborious process to sift through everyone's suggestions, but given that we seem to have almost identical computer specs, I may be able to help you by at the least giving you a copy of my setup files and let you try them on for size. I've sent you an email..Please do read the "read me first" thread at the top of this forum, it contains the basics..The things that impact framerates the most on my system, are Clouds, shadows, and water effects.. as well as setup options for the video card, such as Antialiasing and Anisotropic filering.Once you find the right balance of graphics effects and performance, you may well decide that your config is sufficient to fly FS9 without further changes, as I have.. after some experimenting.
