FSX Texture Problem?

Featured Replies

Hi guys I think I am having a problem with the textures in FSX. While in flight the textures close to the aircraft are sharp and clear, but any textures farther off in the distance are not clear. Also the autogen in the distance does not appear until the my aircraft gets closer. Yes I know I am a newbie but any help would be great. I was having this problem with my laptop initally but I just dismissed it as bad hardware ( my laptop is terrible). Now that I have my new gaming rig I assumed my problems would be gone but they are not. I have attached two pictures of my problem, note the clear textures in the foreground and the blurry textures in the back ground. I also posted a picture of my scenery settings. Note all other settings are on ultra high. My resolution in game is 2048x1152. Here are my PC specs : Motherboard: Evga FTW SLI Processor: Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93 ghz Graphics Card: (2) Evga GTX 460's in SLI (768mb versions)Memory: G-Skill 4 GB @ 1666 mhz 9-9-9-9-24 timingsHard Drive: Barracuda 1 TBI don't think this is a hardware issue. Or a cfg file issue. I have already tried deleting that file and changing the in game settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is this really a texture problem or is it just me?

Based upon preliminary results, I'd say it's you! :( There is a setting in the FSX.cfg file that will extend the sharpness of the terrain rendering. It has the small problem of being reset any time you make a settings change within FSX. Still you can try it and see if it helps a little.Find your FSX.cfg file and open it with Notepad or similar plain text editor. Look for the [TERRAIN] section and the line that reads LOD_RADIUS=4.500000. You can change the 4.500000 to 6.500000 and save the file. Start FSX and things should be sharper further out. There will be an effect on your FPS, as you are asking the sim to render more data. And again, any time you make a change in the settings within FSX the LOD_RADIUS will be reset to 4.500000.I won't ask how your trip to Las Vegas went, because as they say "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas...".

LOD can certainly help but this appears to be the texture quality setting in the driver and that it is set at "performance" rather than "high quality" or/and you are using low anisotropic filtering or just plain trilinear in the driver AND FSX....

Have you set-up your rig properly for FSX?If no, then have a look here:http://www.simforums...187.html#198187After that, go here:http://forum.avsim.n...g-tool-for-fsx/IMO your CPU needs to be overclocked, 2.93 Ghz is too slow for FSX.Ram timings could be more tight...SLI is useless in FSX.When all this is done, you can adjust the settings to a level your rig can handle.

Thanks for all the input guys! I don't think I need to optimize my machine any further its a brand new install of windows 7 64bit regularly defraged every other day besides all those tweek guides are about gaining fps. I don't need that, clearly my rig can handleFSX fine if I can play on customized ultra high settings at 2048x1152 res with AA on at 35-60 fps while flying. @ meshman thanks for the tip I will try that tweek out and see if it works, what is the max LOD that I can set? Also @ freebird 77 my settings have quality selected in the control panel and anisotropic filtering. I was wondering if you guys good do a flight over Las Vegas (like in mine) and take some screen shots and post them here I would like to compare how they look ( Hi res please: 1650x1050 or above) Thanks for all the help guysI still don't think I am imagining this there is definitely something strange with my textures maybe its a rendering problem or my FSX CD is just corrupted for some reason. Its just crazy that the textures in the near to background look so bad even though my processor/ graphics card is up to the rendering task and the res is absolutely huge.

...what is the max LOD that I can set?
Depends what your system can handle? If 6.5 is smooth, then you could try 8.5. FSX will tell you if you've gone too far.

For what it's worth - I did set up the same scenario on my beast (locked at 30fps) and got almost exactly the same display. I moved the LOD to 6.5 and it made little or difference. As I normally fly only in the PNW (OrbX) with nothing else loaded, so this scenery is exactly the default scenery. The mountains look like blobs of beige modelling clay. I certainly think you could load the system some more, as your fps shows you have lots of headroom to play with.

Here are some comparison shots from my rig which you can view in my sig. I am running much older equipment than you are and half the RAM as well, only 2 GB for me. Plus my video card is a generation or two older. I tried to duplicate the shots you posted as far as position and altitude, but this is about as close as I could get. I had to use the Stratosphere as a land mark in the first photo and the golf course in the second photo as a reference point so you can make a better comparison. Also of note, I had to reduce these from 1920 X 1080 to 1600 X 900 since Avsim doesn't like file attachments bigger than 1600 pixels and 200kb, but they dont look much worse reduced than the original size.Lastly, I am just running the stock LOD_RADIUS=4.500000 since I have always been happy with the way it looks on my machine. Frankly, I haven't even tried extending the LOD any further out.In these first two shots I have just GEX textures showing as well as FSDT's KLAS, but you can still judge the ground textures. I cant disable GEX ground textures without overwritting them back to the defaults. In these two shots I have MegaScenery Las Vegas with FSDT's KLAS. The only thing I can think that may cause trouble is the SLI configuration. I have read that sometimes it doesn't play well with FSX unless you are running multi monitor setups or extremely high resolutions. However this is just what I have read thru the years on the forum here and have never tried SLI or Crossfire so personally I can comment on any differences with or without.Regards

@campbellsjc Thanks! Now that's what the textures are supposed to look like when I am flying. Right now they look 10x worse. I will try tweaking the sim this weekend when I get a chance. I hope the LOD change will make big difference. I will post some more screen shots afterI try the tweak out and disable SLI.

No problem. Hope you get it sorted out. If you want any more comparison pics from else where let me know and I will take some snaps for you.I'm sure you will get it sorted though since you have a much better rig than I do. It's probably just a setting somewhere along the line that maybe you missed or maybe something else that will be easy to fix or adjust.

I think it's mainly two things:1. Anisotropic filtering (AF) doesn't look like it's on or set very high to me. Use Nvidia Inspector to force it on to 16X and make sure it's set to anisotropic in the in-game drop down.2. You're using default FSX textures that just look worse - get GEX.

So I tried some tweaks today. I added LOD at 8.5 and then tried adding the line Mipmap=6 and in driver setttings setting anispropic to 16x AA to 8x and LOD bias to clamp. I think this has made a noticeable difference. I have posted some more screens. The first two screens are with LOD = 4.5 in the config. These next two are with LOD=8.5The last two are with Mipmap = 6 and LOD= 8.5If you compare the shots from the original (LOD = 4.5) to the final shots you really can see a noticeable difference. This seems to have fixed the problem nicely. Does anyone know a tweak to stop autogen from loading slowly and poping up as you fly?

It´s a known problem with FSX. They didn´t include "Alpha Fade" - which FS9 had, too bad..." Some people think autogen extends 20 miles.. that is not true, its hard coded for a max of 18-20km and since Aces removed 'alpha-fade' it POPS into the scene in gradual steps as you approach aprox 1/2 that distance with all autogen the slider will allow on the tiles at the point where the aircraft is passing the highest LOD, which can be annoying. The slower the system the more obvious and the sim has a priority level on autogen, the slower the system the less it may display even with the slider set high. None the less, at 7 miles all autogen is off the tiles"http://www.simforums.com/forums/gex-and-utx-setup_topic35620_post207322.html#207322http://www.simforums.com/forums/autogen-pops-again_topic35953.htmlMaybe something you can use in these threads.
