December 21, 201015 yr Commercial Member Hi All!For the guys that operate an i7 950 to 4.0 Ghz ..A questionMy specs are in the sig, so do you find noticable differnece if you use 23x174 instead of 21x191 (bclk x Mult)?I would like to drop to 23x174 and keep some peripheral temperatures lower (qpi e.t.c) __________________________________________________________________________________________ My FS Photos - My MSFS Settings - i7-14700K / 64GB RAM / MSI 4070 Ti SUPER / 1440p
December 21, 201015 yr Very little difference within FSX I'd assume. 23x174 does mean less heat and stress on CPU. Test both yourself, see if they're both stable and test within FSX.
December 21, 201015 yr Moderator The lower the BCLK the better but remember the memory UCLK is a function of the BCLK so you ideally want the best combination of mult x bclk that will result in a UCLK closest to your memory speed. I doubt the temperature change of peripherals will be significant.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
December 21, 201015 yr As someone who is about to soon install my first i7 CPU, what is UCLK?Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
December 23, 201015 yr Author Commercial Member Bruce,I have just upgraded also to i7...i7's have a different theory about how they work and how you overclock them..Briefly:bclk = The old FSB bus speedmult = A Model-specific multiplier that when multiplied by bclk gives the total freq of the CPU. i.e. 23x174=4Ghz also 21x191=4.0GhzBUT the major change from previous theory is that BCLK affects also the speed of the Level3 cache, Memory controller, RAM e.t.cSo it would be logical that from the above example, the 191x21 combo would give better results because bclk=191 and is faster than 174.L3 cache, memory controller and some other stuff are named UNCORE. Uncore components are the parts of the CPU that are NOT cores...So in the chip everything that is not the 4 cores are named uncore. UNCORE has a multiplier also. i.e 16....It means that uncore speed would be 16x191 or 16x174.....HIGHER THE BETTER.Lets go to RAM.1 Important RULE!! : Uncore speed must be at least 2x the DRAM speed...This means that if we have 16x mult in uncore we must have 8x RAM....So lets take the two cases:8x191=1528 and8x174= 1392If you have a 1600mhz DRAM you would prefer 8x191 because its closer to tha reated speed of the RAM...In my case i have Corsair 6GB DDR3 triple channel 1600mhzFGor my chiup and config though, i prefer the following settings (click onm my sig to see the cpu-z validation)7x1748x RAM19x UNCOREBUT: Since my memeory is enough below the rated 1600, i tighten the timingsSo my stock timings are:7-8-7-20 1600I run my memory now @ 1392 6-7-6-18 and its stable....I hope i didnt mess you up with these, since i am relatively new to the OC game..But if you want to go in depth you should head over other more specialized forums about overclocking...P.S. Of course i forgot to tell you that more speed means HIGHER OPERATING VOLTAGES (and is not only on voltage). __________________________________________________________________________________________ My FS Photos - My MSFS Settings - i7-14700K / 64GB RAM / MSI 4070 Ti SUPER / 1440p
