December 31, 201015 yr Hello,Very happy with my new J41. I just wonder if it is possible to direct all sounds (engine and cockpit) to speakers? I am using headsets and if I set headset as default audio device then cockpit sounds will go to headset while engines go to speakers, no matter what I specify at FS sound settings.Thanks. Antonio H.
December 31, 201015 yr Commercial Member Is it a USB headset? If not, I believe you need a second audio card. USB headsets have their own "card" that the computer can use to split the audio streams. If you are using a USB headset, the setting should be set outside of FlightSim in the audio panel. My headset, having a microphone, automatically defaulted to my voice device, so all voice-related streams defaulted there (FS adopted this setting as well, without me specifically setting it in the program). December 31, 201015 yr Author Hello Kyle,I do have a second audio card, a creative soundblaster that is connected to my main speakers. My headset (not USB) is connected to the motherboard audio device. What I mean is that it seems like the sounds from the J41 are split into engines and cockpit sounds. The engines will go to whichever device I set in FS sounds settings. That part works fine. I use the speakers for engine sounds. The tricky part is the cockpit sounds. Those go to the default playback device which I choose in Windows. Of course, if I choose speakers as default playback device then cockpit sounds will also go to the speakers. So I can solve the problem that way. The reason why I want to direct the cockpit sounds to speakers regardless of what is the default playback device is that I use Radar Contact. Radar Contact always directs its audio stream to the default playback device and that is not something I can change. Unfortunately RC doesn't give me a choice of which playback device I want to use. So I have to fly with both RC and cockpit sounds streaming to the headset. In other words, if I want to use Radar Contact I have to set headset as default device. Needless to say, I don't want ATC chat going to main speakers. Then I start FS, go to sound settings and set "Sounds" to my speakers and "Voice" to my headset. Then I start the simulation and enter my J41. I will then have engines to speakers, RC ATC to headset and... cockpit sounds to headset! You see the problem? Cockpit sounds in J41 are very noisy. I not only hear all button and switches sounds, but also the battery sounds (or whatever it is that background constant noise...).My conclusion is that the engine and cockpit sounds in the J41 are split and I wonder if there is any tweaking I can do in order to get them to go together no matter which device I set in Windows as default playback device.Well, I hope you understood what I meant. I got confused myself. Hehe. Well, actually this is not a big problem, but I don't feel like having my headsets on when flying for more than one hour. It becomes uncomfortable after a while. December 31, 201015 yr Set all sounds to Default Device, connect headset to second sound card and set it as Default Communication Device. Works for me with fs2crew and default ATC under Windows7, but I have no idea if this will work with RC.
January 1, 201115 yr Author Thank you for your response!I tried what you suggested. Unfortunately RC sends its output to the default device, not to the communications one. Antonio H.
January 1, 201115 yr Then there's one wired thing that comes to my head: set your headset/second sound card as Default device, start RC, now set your first sound card back as Default and start all other apps... I have two sound cards too, and I have noticed that apps keep using the one, selected as default, at the moment when application was started. If starting RC requires it to be started in some special order, just change Default device prior to starting it, that would be yet another ritual before playing FSX ... :(
January 1, 201115 yr Author RC sends its output to whichever device is the default one. If I change device after starting RC then RC will also change its output to the default one. So what I actually do is the opposite. I start FSX with speakers as default. Then I switch default to headset and start RC. FSX will keep sending its output to speakers while RC sends it to headset. Problem is that cockpit sounds from J41 will also go to headset. In other words, RC and J41 cockpit sounds behave the same way. They switch all the time their output to the default device, even if I change default device after application is started. There is one thing that strikes me. There is something called PMDG sounds. It can be accessed from withing FSX at Help -> PMDG sounds. I see a sounds knob that I can move, but it has no effect at all. Neither on engine sounds or on cockpit sound. It seems like that knob is broken/buggy. I do believe that the function of that knob is adjusting cockpit sounds. If I just got it to work it would definitely be the most elegant solution to the problem. I will have to do some more research about that knob. Antonio H.
January 2, 201115 yr Author I just fixed the problem by lowering the volume of all .wav files. It works great. This way I can still hear the sounds, which I think is very realistic, without me going deaf :) Antonio H.
