Open VFR N. America

New product available per the AVSIM main page. Anyone know anything about this product? Does it work with UTX/GEX or is it a separate standalone scenery? Thanks.http://openvfr.freyt.de/magento/index.php/

Hi Bob, hi everyone,I'm Markus from openVFR. Well, I have noticed your thread and would like to reply to give a bit more details about my project openVFR.openVFR Terrain is what we call a landclass scenery - so similar to UTX. UTX is a very(!) good product as well. But, as openVFR is using a very dynamic dataset from the famous Openstreetmap project, it should be much(!) more actual than UTX, which was produced some years ago now. Furthermore openVFR will be updated regulary. But - for me, the main difference between openVFR and UTX is, that openVFR is completely community driven. So, if you are adding or changing f.e. some roads or adding a wind generator, your changes (and all the changes of millions of other users in Openstreetmap worldwide) will be reflected in the next version of openVFR. This is very powerful. You could even suggest an update to come earlier or request for free a new area for the next development cycle: Well, we try to consider all those requests ;-] Also you can get openVFR individually per country. But openVFR is much more!In general we have three different kind of downloads: "openVFR Terrain", "openVFR Objects" and "openVFR Mesh". All of them can be used stand alone or in combination with other (external) products. Of course, they are well balanced to work together. Once more, openVFR Terrain will just add and shape geographical information/data like roads, railways, forests, lakes, isles, coastlines,... in your FSX. A lot of our customers are running openVFR Terrain with GEX (which will just change the graphics for those vector data). We recommend to first install openVFR and then GEX. Alternatively you could also use Adam Mills free European Ground Textures. I love it. You can find the link here: http://openvfr.freyt...index.php/linksRunning openVFR Terrain together with UTX for one geographical area makes no sense. Of course, it is fine to use f.e. openVFR Europe and UTX America or vice versa. openVFR Objects will add 3D objects to the FSX. It can be used standalone. It is perfectly balanced with openVFR Terrain, but can be also used with UTX and GEX. This is also a nice combination. openVFR Mesh will replace the digital elevation model. So, independantly from other products, it will finetune the shape (heights) of hills and mountains. Pls, let me know, if you need further assistance. Just contact me directly, if you want: http://openvfr.freyt.de/magento/index.php/contactsOr just try it out: An older version of Germany, Austria and Switzerland is available for free. Well, we do not support these versions anymore and the actual versions are much(!) better. But its still good enough to get an impression. You will get it here. Pls, also notice the issues for this version (below on the product page). All the best for 2011 to everyone!GreetingsMarkusopenVFR.dehttp://openvfr.freyt...a-launched-now/carribbean_500px.jpg

Hi Markus and welcome here!I understand perfectly that you are pleased to present your product but I don't find very fair that you compare it with UTX publicly.I would have expected a user to do so, not the dev.I know we live on a free market where knocking copy is allowed but I don't find your presentation very ethical.Just my 2 cts.Apart from that I wish you lot of success with your work.

Hi David,I like UTX very much! Thats what I also included in my post. I even had a very interesting and warm discussion with the UTX team at FSWeekend and I do respect their work very, very much. Their products are really great! So, thanks for pointing out, if my post was not clear enough regarding this situation. GreetingsMarkus openvfr.de

This is a very old thread...anyone have any experience/opinions using this product in North America (specifically the tri state area of NY?

I'm curious to know how the mesh and osm streetmap appearance of this product in FSX compares visually to the HD mesh/OSM freeware scenery for X-plane. The roads and streets in X-plane are 3d and look so realistic...does this FSX product do a good job with this?
