January 5, 201115 yr Hello, my wife's computer is dead. Last week, it wasn't turning on - no power at all. I just replaced the PSU and it does power up but no beeps and nothing on the monitor. The monitor doesn't even recognize that it is hooked up to anything. I popped in a different video card and got the same result. It really doesn't seem like it is booting at all. This was the first time I ever installed a new PSU - I think I did it right. I wasn't sure about a couple connections but if I had a connector that fit an open plug, I plugged it in;) Yes, I did look at the mobo manual and I think I covered everything. Any ideas what the problem may be? It is an older computer so the mobo or CPU could be toast. I'm just trying to make sure it is nothing fixable before I buy a new one. January 5, 201115 yr Moderator Check you mobo manual - there should be a jumper to short the BIOS chip and reset to defaults - usually you place the jumper - power up - waut a few seconds - power down - replace the jumper and power up.Do that and then Remove everything except the PSU and MOBO - no memory, no video, no drives - just mobo, CPU & PSUdoes he PSU stay running or shut down? Any error beeps?if no beeps at all or if the PSU shuts down ASSUMING that you have the board connectors inserted properly - you might have a dead CPU - a little early to make that call.If you do get beeps - replace the memory - try again - should get different beepsreplace video card - see if you can get any soer of BIOS error message. If all is proceeding - replace the drives and continue.Usually I've found mobo not powering up is either the PSU & connections or the CPU.Good luck!Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
January 5, 201115 yr Sounds like your MB isn't getting power, as even bad BIOS and bad CPU have beep codes. Could be a second bad PSU (unkikely) or a problem connecting your PSU to your MB. I assume your PSU has the proper wattage, the proper voltage setting in the selector on the back (if any), the breaker has been reset (if any) and that is is plugged-in :-) Do any lightd/leds light on the MB and/or the PC case when you power-on?Cheers,- jahman.
January 5, 201115 yr Author Thanks. That was quick.Yes, I am getting lights on the case and on my wireless card which I think would mean that there is power to the mobo. I am not getting any hard drive noise but I do have a light on the DVD drive that is on.I though about resetting the CMOS. If that does work, will I have to flash the bios and redo all of the settings? The manual said it will erase all settings but I am not sure what that means.I'll check on the other things. As far as the connections are concerned, here is a link to the manual. The layout is on page 2-2 and 2-3. I have power going to the ATX12V (4 pin)and ATX power (20 pin I think). I also have power going to the drives, CPU fan and case fans. http://issuu.com/squaresoft0/docs/p4g8x_manualThe only thing that threw me was the ASUS EZ plug next to the ATX power. The manual said it was optional. I tried it without and I tried it with it plugged in to one of the 4 pin connections that are used for the drives - same result. The New PSU is a 700W CoolerMaster. It doesn't have any external switches. Yes, I know this thing is pretty old - it was my first FS9 rig. My wife only uses it to update ITunes so I'd like to keep it going as long as possible. Thanks for the help. January 6, 201115 yr It's either RAM or mobo. Try removing all the RAM except for one stick (if you haven't done so already) and then powering on. If you get the same results try again but with a different stick in the same slot. If you still get the same results, try moving the RAM to a different slot. If still no go, you likely have a bad mobo. If you want to be really thorough you can pull the motherboard itself from the case and running it outside the case.
January 6, 201115 yr I had a similar issue on my Striker Extreme, not sure what exactely fixed as I was forced to perform two things at the same time:1)Bumped up voltages due to suspect weak capacitors.2) Replaced hard drive.Reason I replaced hard drive was because I dropped it while putting in another hard drive to test. It looked like it was going to boot on the test hard drive and while I was fiddling around dropped the original HD. So between the two HD and bumping of voltages which included a clean install of the OS, I have been problem free for a couple of months now. January 6, 201115 yr ...I am not getting any hard drive noise...This is odd: I would have thought as soon as you power-up you should be hearing sounds and getting vibes off the HDD, as the motor is connected directly to the power supply and not under any type of software control. So I think somewhere something is not connected properly.Cheers,- jahman.
January 6, 201115 yr Moderator agreed Jahman - there should be either some noise or vibration from the drives or something is amiss.Jeff - resetting the BIOS just puts it to tyhe default settings. You don't need to flash anything. Depending on the BIOS you might have to check your boot order and graphic settings but it should still be fine.Do what Max suggests and let us know.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
January 6, 201115 yr Author Thanks for help. Rest CMOS, moved the RAM around - no luck.Only had it powered up for a minute or two ad the vc was hot to the touch. Burning smell coming from the CPU. I think this thing toast.Fortunately, I have enough parts left over from my last rebuild to build a new one for her - well sort of new, she's getting 4 year old FS rig.I have never built one from scratch. I always pick out the components and have a pro build it. Now that I have all the components laying around, I figure I'll give it a shot. Since I was going to buy a new one anyway, I'll be no worse if I fry something. The hard part is already done - the cpu is still installed on the mobo from my old rig.It is an a socket 939, AMD Athlon64 3800+. Do you think I will be ok installing Windows 7 Pro on it? For her purposes (surfing the net, MS Office, ITunes...), do you think 32bit or 64bit will make a difference? I will only have 2Gigs of memory for it.Any good online guides out there in case I get in a jam? The main thing I am concerned about is what to do after I get it powered up - what do I have to load up, when/how to install the OS, what I have to do in BIOS, how to format the HD... Saw a guide on YouTube - watched him build a rig from scratch only to find that he was using a HD that already had XP loaded on it. I feel cheated - he kind of skipped the money shot so to speak;) MSFS Premium Deluxe Edition; Windows 11 Pro, I9-9900k; Asus Maximus XI Hero; Asus TUF RTX3080TI; 32GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4 3600; 2X Samsung 1TB 970EVO; NZXT Kraken X63; Seasonic Prime PX-1000, LG 48" C1 Series OLED, Honeycomb Yoke & TQ, CH Rudder Pedals, Logitech G13 Gamepad
