hello,I wish to build a new configuration for FSX, here's my actual:Intel Q9400 OC @ 3.7GHZ, Noctua 12, Asus P5Q, 2x2GB Kingston DDR2 800, Asus 9800GTX +, HDD SEagate Baracuda (OS), HDD Velociraptor 150GB (FSX), power 550W SuperFlower, case Thermaltake RS100and here's my project:i72600k, Asus P8P67, 3x2GB Kingston DDR 1600, GTX460, HDD SSD C300 64GB (OS), Velociraptor 150GB, HDD 2TB for datas (WD), power 700W ?I hesitate for the RAM between 1600, 1800, 2000, ... what's best for FSX? 6GB is good, or 4GB is enough?many thanks for your help!

Florian

I have heard 4gb is enough. Ryan from PMDG said FSX uses about 2gbs so I think 4gb is enough.

Ok, and what about hyperthreading? I heard that FSX never use it....And so, I could buy the 2500k instead, which is cheaper...thanks!

I was gonna buy the 2600K but then my friend and after a google search told me and I read that Hyperthreading is pretty useless for games. So I thought I would save money and get the 2500K.

Actually, I've seen peoples FSX's using over 3GB. Yes it may only use below 2GB in normal circumstances, but add photoscenery, PMDG AC, heavy traffic, large and detailed scenery. It will skyrocket. You also have the OS + background programs to run. I'd get 8GBy to be safe, unless you want OOM problems.

OOM problems only occur with 32 bit OS

Wrong! You can easily get an OOM with 4GBy ram ins. 64bit OS

Really?! Thats interesting. With the PMDG planes, you get OOM errors only with 32bit but once you go to 64 bit you lose those errors. I never get them on my current setup which only has 3gb of ram on a 64bit

I can save my money by buy a 2500k and take 6-8GB RAM!and about the memory speed, is it important for FSX ? (1600, 1800, 2000, 2200?)

Florian

No. Ram speed isn't that important. The difference in performance is very small. Id get 1600MHz CL6 over 2000MHz CL9 for example. Obviously 2000Mhz Cl6/7 would be best.

thanks for your analyse chris. And about the graphic cards? is the GTX460 enough to have minimum of 20fps anywhere? Or shall I buy a more powerful (but expeeeeeeeesive) GTX580???

Florian

That's debatable. It depends on what level AA you wish to run. If you could, a GTX 570 would be recommended, but if unable, a 460 should suffice.

I'm not sure for the Graphic card.... there a lot of choice ,between GTX460, SE, GS, ... and GTX480....what is better for the RAM, 4GB CL6 or 6GB CL9 for same price?

Florian

Is that 6GB tri-channel!? If it is, sandy bridge only supports dual channel. If it is dual channel, I'd still recommend the 4GBy.

yes, it was tri-channel (3x2GB), so I think I can put either 2x2GB or 2x4GB on a SB, is it correct?and on X58, I can put 3X2GB for example?
