Crossing parallel runway for takeoff

Featured Replies

I'm wondering how parallel runway crossing clearances are supposed to work when taking off. For example, let's say I'm directed to taxi to 24L for departing but have to cross over 24R to get to it (which would normally be used for landing). You can't cross any active runway without prior clearance, yet I never get a hold short order for 24R. If I sit and wait, I sit there forever. I have to actually cross 24R without clearance and hold short of 24L before RC will give me the go ahead to enter 24L.I guess the same would apply when landing and you turn off the runway, but are going to cross an active parallel runway to get to the terminal. Typically, I would think you hold short until given clearance to cross the parallel but I've never gotten that order. Am I doing something procedurally wrong? Or perhaps due to lack of AI traffic (using UT but don't see much landing/departing traffic). Or is this just not modeled?I appreciate the guidance. Still learning the formalities.Tony

Hi Tony,Simply put when you are on or crossing a runway you should have your strobes activated along with the beacon and nav lights. From what I remember RC does not have the capacity to think and cannot provide taxi/hold short instructions when you are having to cross a runway to get to the active.Really not a huge issue unless you are flying online in Vatsim or IVAO.

Fair enough. I really appreciate the help!

RC4 does not have the capability of holding short before crossing active runways.A third party application is available that if you can display it on another monitor could show an airport diagram with AI active. On all of my FS9 aircraft if they do not come with it I usually install a TCAS instrument for situation awareness. It helps with approaches so you can pace landing speed with preceding aircraft, traffic alerts, and other issues where you need to know the position of AI.I don't know if it will make it into the first release of RC5 but this feature has been discussed in the beta group. Also note that if the airport scenery has been designed to allow the simultaneous use of non-parallel runways the same caution is required.http://www.passur.com/airportmonitor-locations.htm click on LaGuardia which usually has the instance of simultaneously active perpendicular runways. This is a real-time but delayed about twenty minute display for security map of aircraft activities. It requires Javascript to be enabled and zoom in to about a twenty mile or closer radius. Then if you wish click on an aircraft to see data. Boston Logan is another to monitor. The advantage of this site is that you can see the runway layout. Right now the NE corridor of the US is having heavy snow so traffic seems to be light and some airports might have single runway operations to allow snow removal. There are some other locations in the airport list.
