January 29, 201115 yr So I have been struggling to find a good AFCAD of KDAY for FSX. This is my hometown airport and I would really love to see something beyond the FSX default basic. The only file I was able to locate was a poorly done afcad where the airport vehicles are just inside sticking out of the terminals, the gates are off and the jet bridges are stuck in the walls... On top of that if you try anything bigger then a CRJ you crash because the parking spaces are poorly designed.I have tried doing this myself. I struggle getting one parking space complete and thats not even counting if I can get the jet bridge to show up.
February 8, 201115 yr A long time ago I asked Ray Smith, who makes a lot of AFCADS for FSX, to modify KPVD for me. He wisely suggested that I download ADE 1.40 (now 1.47) and learn to do it myself. At first i was a bit put out but i have to say it was a lot of fun and I have now done dozens of them, I even released some on Avsim so others could enjoy them. There is a little learning curve, but the tutorials are good and there is a lot of help n the forum here. I really think you will enjoy it, and again if you are stuck on anything, just ask here or on the ADE forum, there is a ton of help and lots of people view both forums.Kyle
February 9, 201115 yr I agree with Kyle on this one...Once you discover how fun it can be to modify airports yourself, your only concern becomes having the time to do all the airports you want to enhance! Airport Design Editor (free) is one of the best AFCAD style editors around. Perfect for enhancing, updating, and improving airports. Combine this with "Instant Scenery" (payware, Flight1) to add in buildings and objects, and you can REALLY improve a default airport. Take another step and use "SBuilderX" (free, but a bit of a bigger learning curve), and you can lay down some additional scenery items like customized landclass areas and such. Although working up a new AFCAD for an airport on request is a fairly quick process, it's that ease-of-use which actually makes people recommend the do it yourself method! It's a great learning opportunity! Give it a shot - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!-Greg(c152flyboy: They've finished the extension of taxiway Mike at PVD, now extending down the entire length of 5/23, in case you're interested in updating your PVD files! Not sure when you last touched your PVD files...)
February 9, 201115 yr Greg, I loaded into the Avsim Library last February, I think the extension was completed then but now I will have to double check that. I an trying to get the basics of using photoscenery under my airports as well as using the autogen annotator, so I was do for a change anyway. Hopefully by this summer I will have the new airport loaded tot he library.Kyle
February 9, 201115 yr Moderator I agree with Kyle on this one...I agree as well! Although there's a real "danger" that scenery design will effectively replace flight simming as your "hobby" interest... :( Fr. February 11, 201115 yr I agree there Fr. Bill, when i first started doing airports with ADE, i did my home airport because i know it well and it was important for me to get the look and feel of it right in fsx. It was so much fun i started doing other airports around me, them more and more. My flying time dropped by 2/3 unless i was flying to test out my scenery. It is very enjoyable though.
