C208B Grand Caravan Landing Question

Featured Replies

I feel I'm doing something wrong when landing the C208B. I just bought it so I'm still in the learning stage. Thankfully I've flown a few other Cessna's in FSX so have a good handle on what should be happening. That brings me to my question. When I throttle back the manifold pressure goes down to about 500 RPM and it just floats over the runway. It won't settle down for a landing and I know ground effect can't be the culprit here. If I try to throttle back anymore it suddenly drops out of the air. That right there is my issue/concern. I can be at 4,000 feet and idle back but once the RPM falls below 500 it won't glide even though I'm trying to settle her down. Instead the speed plummets like a rock and the plane drops straight down toward the ground. I've installed it three times now and downloaded it twice. I've never had this problem with any other plane payware or freeware or default. I've tried different prop and mixture settings which make a small difference so I'm positive this is something with the flight dynamics. The only way for me to land is to point it down at the ground and at the last second cut the throttle. Just to be clear I have over a thousand hours flight sim time and I'm not referring to 10' cut throttles and flare for landing. I'm saying that at 10' if I cut throttles it drops like a rock and if I don't cut them it glides right above the ground until I hit a tree or something else. I have to fly it down into the ground till the wheels touch then cut throttles. One time I was landing at a runway overlooking the water and it just keep gliding out at the same altitude, out over the beach, over the water, all the way till I hit end flight. Oh sorry I forgot to mention that at 500 RPM it stays at between 70 to 80 KIAS with full flaps. I can't get it to slow down more then that without the above problem, it just sticks there like glue.Edit: I just realized that I should mention I do trim for landing and to be more clear I have been at 8,000 feet cut the throttles and had to enter a -1,500 fpm descent to regain speed because it drops out (from 130 KIAS) that fast.

you have to bring is down under 500. This is how the 208 is flown. In Real live it also have this tendency to "nose dive" almost. This is something that you have to know and be ready for that. bring it down to just above 500 let it settle and as cross the fence bring it down but be ready for it and use a pull back a bit on the yoke to counter the "nose dove"I will see if I can get you the article thats been written here from a real live pilot that explained in detail the phenomenon of the almost "nose down"So just try it and as long as you are aware of it it should not be a problem anymore bringing it down to under 500. If you try to keep it above 500 just because you dont want the nose down effect you will struggle getting it onto the ground. The nose down is just temporary, adjust for it quickly as you know it is going to happen and then bring her in for a landing

I will give that a try and I look forward to reading the article. It is a great plane for sure. Thank you for the help.

I know this thread is a few months old but couldn't help noticing the advice about how the C208 should be landed. The aircraft tends to sink when flaps are retracted, not when extended. Moreover, the characteristic of the C208 on landing is quite typical of many aircraft....when power is reduced, more aft trim is required to relieve "mushiness" on the yoke. Plus, thebig prop on this airplane acts as a great speed brake when power is reduced considerably. Unfortunately the Carenado version does not replicate this. The real airplane is quite easy to land actually. I've never had it "nose dive" on me when I reduce power on landing...a bit of aft trim smooths things out quite nicely. If the airplane in the sim nose dives on you, likely it's a CG issue or a trim issue, possibly both.
