Xfering FSX from HD to SSD

Featured Replies

I am considering a SSD for FSX exclusive. I currently have FSX installed on a seperate HD/ D:. My question is. To digress. I know it would be easy to cut and paste the program and all its contents onto the new SDD. My concerns are with the registry and all the addons. Perhaps I could name the new SSD drive D: and all would be cool. Sounds to simple. Any advicee and specifics in this matter would be extremely appreciated.Thank you kindley

I just did this a month or two ago. Here is what it takes:Install the SSD - and the OS will give it a new drive letter.Copy the entire content of your dedicated D: FSX drive over to the SSD.In my case this was just one copy command for the Program Files folder.Assign a new drive letter to the old dedicated drive.Assign the now free FSX drive letter D: to the SSD.Done!I've kept the dedicated drive as a backup copy, but am not sureit will get much use if any.. I've actually moved the Windows Paging fileto it, so it has something to do..

Excellent!! Thank you Bert. We are on the same page. If it dont work I'll come looking for ya!! I'm sure it will. Thanks again
That'll work for most stuff, but some software activations are tied to either the HDD volume serial number or the actual physical HDD SN where it was installed at the time of activation. Those pieces of software will need to be reinstalled and/or reactivated. Every 8-12 months I copy my FS9 SSD's contents to another drive, do a secure erase on the SSD to free up all the blocks and reset everything, and then recopy from the backup back to the SSD (it's a first-gen SSD that doesn't support the TRIM command). After I do this, even though the drive is the same physical device that the software was originally activated on, all my PMDG planes and some other stuff stops working and requires a reinstall, presumably because the HDD volume serial number changes when the SSD is reformatted after the secure erase. Most add-ons are reasonably accomodating when it comes to the occasional reintallation/reactivation, but if you have software from one of the software vendors with a reputation as an "activation ######" (Ariane and FSD come immediately to mind), you may find that getting their software reactivated is a real ordeal. Ariane is reported to charge a fee for a new software key, and FSD has been reported to actually accuse paying customers of piracy when their unreliable and finicky software activation mousetrap goes "sprooooing." So I wouldn't remove the software from your original HDD until you have things working on the SSD, just to be safe.I think you'll probably end up having to reactivate FSX as well after the transfer.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO
