screen display freeze then release?

Featured Replies

HI:I'm running FS9 with XP. Lately I've noticed that the image on the monitor (in 2D panel mode) will freeze briefly before being released to move again. This is evident on turns and on approach, take off.I've never had this issue before and was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is......Could it be video card related? The only think I've changed is my monitor. I was running a 19 inch screen which I upgraded to a 24 inch screen.Could it be the screen resolution? The resolution is set to default. Thanks, Iain

No expert but I believe that the bigger your monitor the more load you place upon your Gcard which may possibly account for your stutters. Your specs are not THAT different from my own (yours are a bit higher than mine), but i only have a seventeen inch monitor. I would love a big 24 inch ,but not if it means a big degradation in performance. You may have to accept a lower resolution than you had with your nineteen inch. Anywayscheers Andy But no degree in geekeology

Hi AndyI think you are correct.I did some testing and the stutters continue even when I lower the texture settings - although they are not as bad.I will switch back to my 19 inch on the weekend and see if that makes a difference.Seems I may have to upgrade my video card if I want to keep the 24 inch monitor. If it's one of the modern LCD monitors then you don't really have much choice as far as resolution goes, you have to run it in the monitor's native resolution otherwise everything goes all blurry.I actually discovered very little performance difference when I got my 23" monitor (native resolution 1920x1080). This is the res I fly in obviously, but I was fully prepared to splash out on a new graphics card having to change up from 1024x768 I played in previously. The strange thing is, there was no noticeable difference in performance. Changing detail levels etc has as much of an effect as before, but running at basically full HD makes no difference. Maybe I'm lucky. Your stutters are something I have experienced but they were the same at half the res I'm running at now. For that you might want to look into the various settings in your fs9.cfg file. Lowering texture_bandwidth_mult (don't have it here but it's something like that) did the trick here.

HI there!Yes the new monitor is a Viewsonic 24 inch and the resolution is automatically set. You cannot change it (1920 x 1080).I've played with various settings (display) and it really makes not much difference what setting you set.The stuttering is not that bad and only occurs during high angle turns. I assume this is because the graphics card is attempting to read the texture files for what I am flying over (I think). I also note that when I hit spot view it takes a few seconds to render the landscape and aircraft - something that did not happen before I upgraded to the larger monitor.I'm quite happy to buy a replacement graphics card if this will solve the issue.I'll switch back to my 19 inch on the weekend and see of the problem persists. Thanks, Iain

Actually you are quite lucky if (when using your nineteen inch mo) you didn't get those turning stutters ,I get them with my seventeen inch ,but it varies, if for instance the weather is clear or few clouds I get very few turn stutters( also depends on the aircraft i am using as well ,for instance FFX ,VISTALINERS are excellent for smooth running and taxing as well where you can also get turn stutters ,on the other hand if i am using say a POSKY 747-400 v4 and i have heavy cloud cover i may get quite pronounced stuttering on banking).Sim is a strange beast one day i seem to have a smooth trouble free flight ,the next day I will be fiddling with settings IE reducing sliders ,deselecting various options trying others . The silly thing is I have done this for years now ,and i doesn't usally make any differencerolleyes.gif.FS smooth flight sometimes seems to be an attitude of mind IE if i am feeling stressed or anxious so is the sim and vice versa .Andy

Ain't that the truth! But to be fair this flightsim tweaking can break a man, and I don't spend hours tweaking any other game I own. In fact I don't spend more than a few seconds during initial installation, so there is definitely something suspicious about the way flightsim is put together. You're still right though, I've found myself tweaking until I seem to get it right, and then the next day I load it up again and it seems like I'm back at square one. The time spent tweaking vs time spent flying is probably close to 1:1 and it's immensely frustrating, but sometimes you just need to let it be and go flying.BUT again I don't have any issues like this with any other software *sighLooking at my fs9 backup folder, there are over 50 versions of fs9.cfg from 5+ years of experimenting and saving backups called "the magic fs9.cfg" which is always eventually replaced by "the even more magic fs9.cfg".And then you change something in your pc and start all over again. I wonder if my medical insurance covers fs9.cfg-induced stress.

LOLI hear you both.... Big%20Grin.gif I "used" to spend an inordinate amount of time tweaking and messing with settings - and like you, things went well for a few days before having to do it again.Oddly, FS works perfectly somedays and on others - well it doesn't want to coperate. I turn it off and do something else when all else fails...Personally I think it's Microsoft related as its occurred on every FS version i've owned. It never worked straight out of the box even with new PC and other software. I have a dedicated PC just for FSIt is excerptionally frustrating, especially if you have limited flight time and have to spend it tweaking. But, it's consoling to know it is not me and that many others have exactly the same issue (a bunch of fruit is better than just one fruit) Big%20Grin.gif Back to the thread topic - do you think a new videocard would help my situation???Thanks, iain

I want to say yes but have to be careful with the answer because of the mystery that is FS. I'm sure that are others with more expertise on the matter but we've all read those posts from people who bought a new, faster graphics card and end up with FS performing worse than before. So I'd say yes it will improve things but make sure you get the right one, maybe someone can make a recommendation based on their own recent purchases. I'd like to know myself too.

True...My hassle is my PC is quite ancient by PC standards now and the newer graphics cards have a different interface. I forget the terminology IP something or other, but the new cards will not fit the slot., Iain

Exactly my problem too, I have a PCI Express 1.0 slot on my motherboard which severely limits choices. In fact seeing as though it's 2011 I wonder if there's anything available at all :(Such is life with computers. Every PC I've ever bought has been advertised as "upgradeable". I've never upgraded any of them because nothing would fit! Maybe it's time to build that dream flightsim rig.

You sure its not AGP ? i have a GForce 6600 GT and that is AGP .By the way these older cards are still available ,but you may have to hunt on the net for them ,perhaps a specialist PC shop could order one for you .Try Googleing AGV graphics cards and see what turns up.AndyPS remember that the more powerful your GCard the more load it will put on your power supply unit as well ,so it may be worth making sure you have a A PSU of sufficient wattage.

Definitely agree on the PSU, best to get a nice one. Just want to point out that getting a super new graphics card that is compatible with your old motherboard doesn't necessarily mean you'll get full performance out of it. The slot now becomes the bottleneck and the graphics card will only perform as well as the motherboard allows it to. Getting a new motherboard that can keep up with a new graphics card may be the only way.

HIOK I changed my 24 inch monitor for my old 19 inch monitor and the SAME problem occurred... So, it does not appear to be monitor resolution related.Perhaps it is driver related.I recently cleaned out the PC completed and reformatted installed XP afresh. Perhaps I downloaded newer or older drivers than what was originally installed on the PCCan you recommend which drivers to use from NVIDIA for the set up I'm running (see specs in signature file)Thanks, Iain
