Engine dies on start-up

Featured Replies

I found this old bird, a DH.114 Heron and I am overhauling the aricraft.cfg. Here's my prob. When I start my engines, it fires up right away. If I don't apply any throttle, it'll die. I usually push the throttles to about 10%, the engines will stay alive. I use Ctrl+E to start. And it is a FS9 model on FSX system. Funny, as I typed this, I felt like I am taking my car into the shop.The stuff after the // are the original stats.[piston_engine] //de Havilland Gipsy Queen Mk.30 Series 2power_scalar = 1.0cylinder_displacement = 93.43 //110.33compression_ratio = 6.5number_of_cylinders = 6max_rated_rpm = 3000 // 2500max_rated_hp = 250fuel_metering_type = 1cooling_type = 0normalized_starter_torque = 0.3turbocharged = 0max_design_mp = 0min_design_mp = 0critical_altitude = 0emergency_boost_type = 0emergency_boost_mp_offset = 0emergency_boost_gain_offset = 0fuel_air_auto_mixture = 1 auto_ignition = 0max_rpm_mechanical_efficiency_scalar = 1idle_rpm_mechanical_efficiency_scalar = 1max_rpm_friction_scalar = 1idle_rpm_friction_scalar = 1[propeller]thrust_scalar = 1propeller_type = 0propeller_diameter = 7propeller_blades = 2propeller_moi = 5beta_max = 40beta_min = 15min_gov_rpm = 1400prop_tc = 0.1gear_reduction_ratio = 1fixed_pitch_beta = 0low_speed_theory_limit = 80prop_sync_available = 0prop_deice_available = 0prop_feathering_available = 1prop_auto_feathering_available = 1min_rpm_for_feather = 700beta_feather = 0power_absorbed_cf = 0defeathering_accumulators_available = 0prop_reverse_available = 0minimum_on_ground_beta = 0minimum_reverse_beta = 0

Funny, as I typed this, I felt like I am taking my car into the shop.
:( Lol, I've thought that too before.“Why won’t this damn thing start? I've got fuel and ignition - what gives?”From your description...I'd first try lowering the propeller_moi.Try maybe 3.5This is a long shot, but since your engine starts then dies, it might be an idle speed problem. If I recall lowering the prop moi will let the engine idle quicker.

I have had that problem. If the engine quit at idle I changed the min_throttle_limit = 0 to min_throttle_limit = 0.1 in the engine section of the aircraft.cfg. Then try it. It helped me. I did that and that was the fix. Thanks!

Although this isn't necessarily a problem, as older aircraft like this the engine will stall if it the throttle is cut for too long.

Yeah, I thought that too when I was having the problems. I know about starting older engines, though not necessarily airplane engines and how you have to give a little juice to keep them alive until the engine warmed up.The reason for my fix was more convenience than performance. I would have to start the engines every time I came to a complete stop when I would use the Ground Handling gauge (auto taxi speed). I chuckled every time the engines died and thought, "what must the passengers be thinking every time the plane comes to a stop, the engines die. Exactly would not instill confidence in me in the plane." It would be neat if FS could simulate a cold engine running hard (wanting to die) and is more stable as it warms up.

FS does simulate that, you just need to be able to modify gauges or what not. Most of my older planes are hooked up to gauges and effects that will show the cold engine start-up smoke and it will take a real long while to start in the cold.

Good Day,
