February 28, 201115 yr Im getting ready to order my parts for my 2600k build, Is the Nick N guide still the way to go for the install on Win 7 64bit, I saw the guide was from 2009 so wasnt sure if that is the best way to do my install. Also still debating on if dual WD raptors 150gb is enough space or would should I jump one of them up to 300gb. Do I really need a fast HD for my OS. Would like to go SDD but my budget is $2000 and im at $1800 with this build. Any way to cut some cost or upgrade please let me know. February 28, 201115 yr A fast drive for the OS is a waste of money. You only get to save a few seconds on startup & shutdown
February 28, 201115 yr I'm not sure myself, but is the 580 worth the $150 extra over the 570? Personally, I love my SSD - fast startup, fast shutdown, and MUCH more responsive in between. Trust me, it's more than startup time. SSD drives make a computer feel much quicker. See what I did with your monies?! I got you an SSD, Modular PSU, nicer looking case (actually, this week I prefer the Corsair 650D, but I didn't think you would agree with the $199 price tag), full-on water cooling AND I saved you $50 ! If this seems agreeable so far (big if), consider changing the case from the 600T to the Corsair 650D (expensive, I know - but it's a killer case and should be in stores in the next couple weeks according to a Corsair rep) and change the cooling from the Rasa RS240 to the Rasa RX240. Thicker low fin-density radiator will allow for excellent cooling with very low rpm fans and consequently, much quieter PC. I realize I told you about the 600T just last week, but I've just come to the conclusion that for the extra money, the 650D is a case you will have for a VERY long time - so well worth the money in my opinion. It's of very simple taste to, which I like. I mean, if you keep Firefox in your old magnetic drive, it'll take just the same to open/close. Same goes for everything else. What sort of things feel quicker?

Same goes for everything else. What sort of things feel quicker? Here's what I have. Programs installed on SSD start quicker. Honestly, even more important that quickness, I like how quiet SSD drives are. Eventually I would like to replace my 1TB HDD with a 240GB SSD - for noise reasons more than anything else. Have to wait til they're cheaper though.SSD:- OS- Program FilesHDD: Partition 1- FSX- REXHDD: Partition 2- Downloads- My Documents- My Music- My Pictures- My Videos Corey Meeks FS2020 | AMD 7800X3D | ASUS ProArt 4080 Super | ASUS B650E-I Mini ITX | 2x32Gb DDR5-6000 CL32 | DELL 38" U3818DW (3840x1600) | FormD T1 | Thermalright AXP90-47 | Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 1000W
February 28, 201115 yr Programs installed on SSD start quicker.Exactly my point An SSD only for the OS will only be faster in registry searches and a few other things that most of us don't do too often. Obviously if you have spare space to house some of your apps, those will be as lot more responsiveIn a few years when the prices go down and size goes up, it will be great to even have our data in SSDs. Moving large files in a few seconds and all...
March 1, 201115 yr One other note on SSD drives. All the SSD makers are getting ready to release their next generation of SSD drives based on the SF-2000 controller. Whereas previous generation drives based on the SF-1200 controller had read speeds as high as 350ish MB/s, these new drives will have read speeds of something like 550ish MB/s. Quite a significant performance leap. Check out this OCZ Vertex 3 review. If I understand this review correctly, we're looking at a 40% improvement in sequential read/write speed and 20% improvement in random read/write speed. You can look at this in 1 of 2 ways: good deals on older SSD drives or much better performance on newer drives! Win, Win! March 1, 201115 yr I don't know what that's supposed to mean Alain, but it's ok. nevermind EDIT: ok, I googled that Z-Drive and those were the data rates listed. So you mean that FSX takes advantage of disk cache? Edited March 1, 201115 yr by dazz
