Cant enter certain frequencies in my comms

Featured Replies

Hello AllOn my flights, as I near my destination I like to check the ATIS for weather/runway info. I use FSNav. I have found though that I cannot always enter the correct freq as displayed In FSNav.As example if say the ATIS freq is 134.35 I can only enter 134.36 (Comm won't except 5)I believe this could be something to do with the radio's section of Aircraft Cfg, I know these can be altered (some downloaded aircraft actually will ask you to do this) but I am not sure. This problem doesn't occur with every ATIS, but it is a bit annoying. As a pilot albeit a virtual one, knowing which runway to land on is a good idea.(I know you can make a guess using wind direction) but if there is an ATIS i would like to be able to tune to it.Any thoughts please?cheers Andy

I've found this before but in my experience you can just "round up/down" to the nearest one and it works. For example the other day I believe the ATIS frequency where I was approaching was something like 128.975 and I could only tune .5, .7, .9 etc.I just tuned to 128.97 and it still picked up the ATIS.I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me can explain the cause.ThanksMartin

Thanks MartinI did wonder whether that was the case. The next time this happens I will try rounding down/up and see what happens.I new I could rely on a Brit simmer to be mighty brained.Big%20Grin.gifcheers Andy

It could be the radio gauge in the aircraft itself that is the problem. Some gauges with only 2 decimal places display the rounded up freq values. So tuning to 128.975 might display in the radio gauge as 128.98. But really it istuned to .975.Regards.Ernie.

There we go, I told you someone cleverer than I would be able to provide an explanation!I'm more of an..."if it works...don't ask questions" kind of problem solver :(

Actually, the "rounding problem" lies deep within FS's code base. If a programmer wishes absolute accuracy, then appropriate steps must be taken to overcome FS's dementia...For example, when calculating the third decimal place for a com radio's drum display, I have to add a tiny correction scalar to ensure that it always rounds up correctly:(A:COM1 ACTIVE FREQUENCY,Mhz) 100 * 0.1 + 10 % flrNone of this is of any use whatever to a casual user, but it is meant to explain the "why" of what's happening, even with the default aircraft avionics! :(

I've just finished designing an old Narco radio and have found an error in the FS9 SDK docs. Nav frequencies are incremented/decremented in 50KHz steps (108.0, 108.05 etc) contrary to the docs which say 25KHz steps. Com frequencies are incremented/decremented in 25KHz steps (120.000, 120.025, 120.050 etc). The Bendix/King default radios display only 2 digits after the decimal point for COM and NAV. Therefore the Com side cannot display the three digit fractional frequency value and should display .00 .02 .05 .07 and so on. So, a question if I may, what radios are you using? Entering 134.36 into a 720 channel radio should be a forbidden value, if you don't get the fractional sequence mentioned above the radio, in my opinion, is designed wrong. In today's environment real and simulated I think all Com radios change in 25KHz steps (118.000 to 136.975 giving 720 chans) and Nav in 50KHz steps (108.00 to 118. 95 giving 200 chans. Hope this helps.David
