Best monitor for fsx?

Featured Replies

..very, very, interesting discussion, I'm running 3 HP 22" over TH2GO 5040x1050, it's nice, but I do not like the monitor bezels sticking in the middle, and the fact that all things are over starched, so my though are toward replacing all the 3 with 1 HDTV 40" / 47". cheers !Yair Irvine CA
A problem to be aware of with very large screens is that the extra width itself creates visual distortion. That is, the further the eyes are from centre of the display, the more distortion. Try sitting where a visitor would sit at your FS setup and you will readily see this effect. The screen itself becomes physically narrower as far as one's eyes are concerned but the actual image remains full width. This is why wide movie screens are curved- in effect a means of having all points of the screen the same distance from one's eyes. Ideally a wide computer display should also be curved so that every point is same eye distance. There are curved very wide monitors- but also very pricy. Commercial simulators use curved projection screens.Another simple option is multiple (modest sized) monitors placed in an arc to achieve width. Th2Go works well for virtual simming while two (or even one) video cards can drive triple 2D views. In the case of multi monitors used for 2D views, the bezel correction can be extremely accurate- to 1/100º, with the result that the eyes/brain see what appears to be a single very wide image. (Comparable to what your brain sees as a single view when looking thru' the combined windshield and side windows of your car.Three 19" monitors will generate a combined image of about 47" in width.AR

.... thx AR for your comments....so what you saying is that, with a 46' HDTV I should expect some distortions. In my case, I use VC 90% of the time. Should I keep them on the same line or should I set them in an angle to generate a width?, and, what about the facts that in an outside view the Bird looks like one of the famous "Nathan's" Hot doge? Yair- Amount of distortion depends on the angle from eyes to sides of the screen. Hence the closer to the screen, the bigger the angle(perspective) and the greater potential for distortion. Try the experiment of moving your head/eyes laterally so you are looking at your current monitor at an angle. Distortion is caused by the pixels being seen at an angle rather than straight on- and so apparently compressed in width!Visualize a straight line from monitor corner to corner- as your eyes move laterally away from the centre point, the apparent monitor width narrows, and the line gets steeper. Eventually the line seems to become almost vertical! Also be aware that getting close to a large screen as a means of increasing perspective angle, will probably require bumping up resolution to avoid graininess. And higher resolution requires more computer horsepower. All too often, I fear that the quest for ever bigger screens leads to simply moving the new monitor further away- without really gaining much benefit. Its like a dog chasing its tail!AR

.. nice explanation AR .. I start to get the idea, r u some kind of an optometrist by a chance smile.gif ..... Now it's time to run some experiments. I'll re-commission my old Rig ( AMD Phenome II X4 955BE GTX460) and hook up to my Rear-Projection DLP 50" 1080D 60Mhz , and we will see how it looks like Loser.gifso, stay tune&I'll c u mañana !!!!!!!!!!!Yair
