Best monitor for fsx?

Featured Replies

I can't seem to find a 1920x1200 led backlit monitor for fsx. I'm looking for 27"-30". So whats more important high resolution or LED in 1920x1080. Also if that's the max resolution on the monitor then I guess you can only run fsx at max 1920x1080 right? If that's the case how does fsx look? Any suggestions?ThanksJohnJJr

John - I'm running a 47" LG 2010 model. You want the best black level you can get for night flying and the LG with its zonal backlighting really helps.Cheersjja

What's zonal backlighting and how does it work?cheers,- jahman.

Hey Jim,Good to see you again. Have not seen you posting anywhere in a long time! How is that superduper 2600K working? Still able to run well above 5GHz?Kind regards,
Any suggestions?
Take it for whatever it is worth ...I know what would be driving force in my search for the new FSX monitor. It would have to be Nvidia 3D compatible, I know Acer has a 27" one, LED-backlit.FSX in 3D is apparently spectacular and from my own experience being in a real full scale commercial simulator, lack of 3D is really the single most detrimental factorwhen using FSX.

Ok searching on the net I can find monitors to 30" with high resolutions (dell U3011) but we're talking $1500 bucks. Now I went down to Best buy today and saw alot of HDTV's from 32"-60" and up. Prices for a 37" or 40" were about $600 to $800. In fact they have a 42" LG (model 42LK520) 1080p/120mhz LCD TV with 2.4ms response time, 1920 X 1080 max resolution on sale for $686.99 . Now I'm thinking what's the advantage of getting a monitor over a HDTV at those prices. The only thing I can think of is higher resolutions some monitors offer like the Dell Ultra Sharp U2711 that has 2560 X 1440 max resolution but that costs $900. So I guess the thing I'm asking is-Is it nessesary to run FSX at higher resolutions over 1920 x1080 to get the best clear sharp images that would make the extra money and smaller monitor worth it or is 1920 X 1080 with high AA settings sufficient? Another question I have is when running Fsx at these higher resolutions isn't that hurting the frame rate causing it to run slower?

Hi again Stephen - running at 5ghz (fulltime) these days with 100% stability. Still waiting to swap the mobo but it has been fine using the SATA 3 ports. Did you every get a replacement board?Cheersjja

To repeat - probably the most important thing to consider with a panel fo FSX is the black level. Many LCD's fall flat with night scenes which is why I chose the LG 47" with zonal backlighting. What is does is help maintain high contrast in dark scenes (night flights) . This is something that the best CRT's excelled at.Good luck in your search.jja

Jim, glad to hear things are fine on your end! Yes sir, I swapped boards with ASUS. Even though there is no reason to think they might hold a possible FSX improvement, the Z68 boards are getting the buzz. You might be able to return your board and buy the new kid on the block if it seems worth it. There likely will be no difference for us though according to whatever scanty information is out yet. From what you were able to run at out of the gate, you likely have one of the best CPUs on the planet. Glad to see you piping it down to 5.0 though, as it makes the rest of us feel better! :Big Grin: Apologies to OP for the sidetracking the thread into greetings and other stuff!Kind regards,

I'm thinking of picking up a Panasonic TC-L32DT30. It's a 32" LED 240Hz set with "3D." (Although I don't expect too much on the 3D front with FSX, I'm hoping to future-proof against Flight.) I've seen reviews of the 37" UK version (TX-L37DT30B) and for just under 1000USD the panel response times look impressive. The only drawback I can see is the black level - quoting a reviewer, "a little behind some of the competition but respectable nontheless."Whether I go with this model or another TV, I'd be connecting it to a nVidia card - so with DVI ouputs, what's the best way to connect a TV to my PC?? A DVI-to-HDMI adaptor? Wax string and duct tape??

I just purchased a Samsung 6000 series HDTV 32" as a testbed to replace my Samsung 244T 24" LCD Monitor. While the monitor had a slightly higher resolution I'm keeping the HDTV as my primary display and moving the 24" to secondary duties. I like the 32" size as it is big enough to satisfy but can still fit on a desktop with it's built in stand, when you go larger than IMO it's better to wall mount, moreover there comes a point of diminishing returns where as your screen size increases typically so will your viewing distance. The only place I really notice the resolution difference is in on screen text. I generally like to open and un-dock my primary flight displays/instruments and drag them to a second monitor. Even in a virtual cockpit only aircraft like the Real Air Duke resolution of the guages doesn't suffer as much as I thought it was going to, I think I am going to try to connect to my 55" HDTV just to see if bigger really is better but i have a feeling the 32"-40" maybe a 46" would be as large as I would personally like to go; YMMV?As far as connecting to the HDTV my Nvidia card had a built in mini-hdmi connector so all I needed was a mini to standard hdmi cable and I was set. DVI to HDMI Cables are common though and that is how I would connect if the mini connector had not been on my card. The only thing you loose with that route is the audio channels.I think you'll pay a price premium for the 240hz and 3D especially in the smaller HDTV's. With that said, I do think 3d is the way of the future but I also believe were in it's infancy. I do have an eye out on those Nvidia 3D shutter glasses though. 2 x 32" HDTV's and a matrox TH2GO is another interesting possibility. One thing I have certainly learned...just about anything dealing with FSX is your only limited by your imagination and your pocketbook!

Thanks for the advice! In looking at the Big River I see a rough 160USD difference between the Samsung and the Panasonic TVs. Thinking that FSX / Nvidia won't be able to take full advantage of the Panasonic 3D feature, the technical difference may be mostly in the 120/240 refresh rates.A work colleague has generously donated a 24" Samsung monitor "for the cause" which will gain me a minor improvement from my Dell 22" - so I'll sleep on the HDTV option for now.

Search this forum for people who are using FSX in 3D and are saying it is absolutely amazing, but this is not "HDTV 3D", it is the Nvidia 3D they are using and for that you need Nvidia compatible monitor. From my own experience the HDTV 3D is still rather lame.

..very, very, interesting discussion, I'm running 3 HP 22" over TH2GO 5040x1050, it's nice, but I do not like the monitor bezels sticking in the middle, and the fact that all things are over starched, so my though are toward replacing all the 3 with 1 HDTV 40" / 47". cheers !Yair Irvine CA

That's exactly why I never went for the TH2Go: 2 monitor bezels + 1 aircraft windscreen bezel = Bezel mayhem! Yikes!Cheers,- jahman.
