FANCON 2011 & PMDG

Featured Replies

Its great to hear that there will be a return of FANCON this year in DC. I was wondering if PMDG will be hosting any NGX specific events at the conference? Hopefully the NGX will have been out for several months by then :( and it would terrific if PMDG staff held some in-depth Q&A sessions.Charlie Felix - KSBP

You're not the first person to call it DC, so the following isn't meant to be a slight against you, Charlie.Herndon is distinctly not DC. Most of the locals will put off "oh yeah, I live in DC" because nobody would know Herndon unless you lived here, but it's outside the beltway and I'd have a hard time calling anything outside the beltway DC (it takes 20 min, no traffic, to get to the beltway from Herndon). Heck, I remember when it was a trip out to Dulles to take a flight. Nothing was out there, and at that point there was no midfield terminal. That definitely wasn't DC back then. Odd how the term creeps out. As long as Winchester doesn't start calling itself DC, I think we're safe.Reminiscing and quasi-corrections aside, it'll be nice that it's at the Dulles Hilton, as that's maybe 5 minutes away from me.

Seriously? The five borrows of NYC, the Twin Cities, Chicagoland, Sea-Tac, D/FW, Kansas City (there's two), Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. There's a dozen subburbs for each of these metroplexes of amalgamated identity that has its own worthwhile individual character... but aside from the crazy people who run baseball's Angels (is it LA or Anaheim? Howabout just California Angels? No, fine, "The California Angels of Los Angeles playing in Anaheim are proud to present the artist formerly known as the symbol that used to mean "Prince" to sing our National Anthem, ne our long time unofficial anthem, and before that known as a drinking song, and formerly just a poem."), no one really gives a hoot.I've been to Herndon. Nice enough place. Not unlike my town of Olathe. But "Olathe Center" is heard as much on the aviation band as "Herndon Center." And both cities owe their quaint existence to the major city over yonder, ARTCCs notwithstanding.

Yes, seriously. In support of that idea, Washington Dulles International Airport wasn't so named until a couple decades after its opening (originally Dulles International Airport, all the way up to 1984). Some may argue that's partially due to suburban expansion, while I would argue it was somewhat of a hook to draw more traffic out to the airport, which was still considered somewhat of an oddity at the time (another way they pushed traffic out there was the Perimeter Rule at National).I understand the ARTCC comparison, even though ZDC is located in Leesburg, which nobody around here would call Washington (being another 20min west of Herndon). ARTCCs are actually intentionally placed away from the city for reasons of security, so the fact that they use a name from the adjacent major city makes sense, despite the location.I'm not trying to bag on anyone here, but if you think you're going to be anywhere near DC, its monuments, or even a Metro station, you're in for a surprise. On that note, anyone who comes in for the event is welcome to email/PM/otherwise ask for dinner recommendations in the immediate Herndon/Reston/Chantilly area, and I can play tour guide for a bit if necessary. I'm sure the event will keep you busy event, but the offer stands.
