Map Servers? Trying to find new ones

Recommended Posts

Hi allInstalled Tileproxy onto my Win 7 64bit machine at weekend. As discussed in the instructions and in forums some areas have great detail others look v low quality. At the moment the only service which seems to work with Tileproxy is the Bing Maps one. I've tried the other suggestions but I just end up with black scenery and no detail:(I see that there is an updates thread but how do I know which update is for which service?I've tried to find other map servers with better detail for (ie) Jersey in the C.I, Trondheim, Nuuk, Beirut but the only one that looks any good is google earth and I know we can't use that service.Any ideas?ThanksAdam

Adam, are you on FS9 or FSX... I've heard of black tiles on fs9 but I don't recall such an issue on FSX.Updates are for map versions. VE/Bing is the only one that updates often - look at pg6 for the latest; jump back to pg 5 for a post with summary info and code to add Norwegian server.Loyd

Hi LoydThanks I'll go through the updates thread this evening. I'm using FSX. I don't get black tiles...the whole scenery area is blank so I guess Tileproxy is unable to download from other servers apart from Bing (which does work albeit at lower quality than google).CheersAdam

Webatlas is good for Norway, but I've since realized Tileproxy only accepts 4 digits in balance, so the balance can be changed to "balance=1234" http://forum.avsim.net/topic/234565-map-version-update/page__view__findpost__p__1841540
Hi Morten thanks for the link.I've been using Bing maps on my little journey around your beautiful country and the results are pretty good in built-up areas (see pic below taken SW of Oslo near Nesoddtangen). Really looks nice!I'm going to switch to the server you suggest and see if I can improve the terrain in less populated areas (which are quite pixelated using Bing). I'll post back later.RegardsAdam

Hello, some time ago I found out about a french map service, www.geoportail.fr . Their material looks suitable for the use with tileproxy.I am not sure about their image source - is it something we already know from e.g. VE/Bing - or is it something different? And at least: Is there someone who knows how to write the Proxyuser.ini-section for this map service?J.B.

I'd like to second J.B.'s request for somebody with the knowledge to develop the proxyuser.ini section for the "French Service" based on the Geoportail service, if possible. I've checked a few places in France and Geoportail map resolution is much better than Bing and much, much better than Yahoo in the places I checked! Here is a comparison of Geoportail vs. Bing. This is a small, private airport at Meribel, near Courchevel, France. It is not included in the FSX 24,000 airports... but I like to do soaring in that area and can land here with tileproxy/Bing mapping. Thanks,John G.

Can anyone help? Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea to find out how to configure Tileproxy for this Geoportail.fr map service...
