  1. First let me say you are hardly a "newbie" with 663 posts! I have been flying FSX with TileProxy (TP) for many years and don't invest much money in anything else, except UTX Europe and UTX USA which give you some nightlights that FSX/TP doesn't provide, plus a lot of other free addons. I will attempt to answer some of your questions as follows: - How does TileProxy compare? Is it worth running instead of the above? I don't know, I don't have those addons. You will only get 2D photorealistic scenery with TP (up to 30cm./pixel) of most anywhere in the world that is cover with good LOD from Virtual Earth/Bing or Google Earth. If they have poor imagery in a particular area, so will TP. Flying 500' to 1000' AGL looks great with TP. Flying lower, scenery is 2D (flat) except for all of the addon scenery for addon 3D airport scenery, stock FSX airports, etc. (see example from Exeter England below). If you are OK with this, then you don't have to buy anymore scenery packages (TP is free). - What is the best LOD to use in TP for optimum balance between quality and performance? The LOD depends on the capability of your PC CPU/RAM/Disks/SSD/Interconnection speed/etc. Since TP doesn't autogen any buildings, the load isn't that great and you can get pretty good FPS with lower end PC's. You just have to try it. Actually, I use 60cm./pixel and get good photorealistic scenery most anyplace in Europe and USA in particular. - On a flight of say 1 hour, how much disk space is used up by downloaded texture files, given above settings? This depends on your LOD settings in TP (proxyuser.ini file) and how much Gb of disk space you have (which is very cheap today). I usually do not delete any TP photorealistic files. This way they do not have to be downloaded again in a future flight in the same area. You can actually fly offline with no internet connection (and no performance hit from the high speed internet tile downloads) if you already have flown extensively over the same terrain before. Also, I do not delete cache files from FSX on exit. This allows me to restart FSX/TP much faster. - Does one typically delete downloaded files after completion of a flight? This question is answered above. - Does TP use different LOD files depending on the altitude of the aircraft? Yes, TP is constantly using different LOD tiles/files depending on altitude and distance. This does require a fairly powerful PC or you get stutters. You can read more about this in Christian Buchner's User Manual which is automatically installed with TP. Here are links to a few more hints for installing and using TP are found here: http://www.edtruthan.com/tileproxy/tutorial/ Ed Truthan's TP Guide - a must read. https://sourceforge.net/projects/tileproxy/files/tileproxy/ TP Nov. 2008 Beta8 download (353Mb). Yes TP is very old and not really supported anymore, but is still great scenery and free!! http://www.flashearth.com/ for checking the LOD you can expect from TP before flying over any area. http://ant.dev.openstreetmap.org/bingimageanalyzer/# Bing imagery analyzer to see actual LOD from 1-20. 2. Hi you two, I guess there are three of us... Unfortunately, you are right. We only have one service - MS Bing/virtualEarth. That is the bad news. The good news is that virtualEarth has a very good level of detail/resolution in many places on earth - especially well populated areas in USA, Canada, Europe and elsewhere. If you want to check out the level of detail for a specific area of the world before an FSX/TP flight, I recommend using Flash Earth with "Bing Maps (Labels)" selected as the Map Source. Here is the link: http://www.flashearth.com/ Yahoo Map services were shut down early in 2015. Here is the shutdown notice: https://developer.yahoo.com/maps/ Unfortunately there is a high monthly price to use one of the required Map Tile API's. Here is the pricing structure: https://developer.here.com/plans/api/consumer-mapping Similarly, the Norwegian map service has also gone to an API purchase data plan and is no longer available free. Here is the Webatlas info translated into English: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webatlas.no%2Fwordpress_WA%2F&edit-text=&act=url Enjoy VirtualEarth while we still have it, John G.
  3. Hi Pat, I made an attempt at translating your September 28, 2015 revision to your excellent "Tileproxy - Guide en français" into English. I used Google Translate on your web page (http://tileproxy.eklablog.com/) to create a Microsoft Word document with the English translation and links that were in your French version of the guide. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/63masmp7hmeron5/Tileproxy_Guide_in_English_Pat_Garret_Rev1.pdf?dl=0 Sorry for the late response to your post. I hope this is a good start towards an English version of your guide... Regards, John G.
  4. I had a chance today to download Pat Garret's Tileproxy Guide translated into English to check the re-formatting and to test all of the links in the Guide. I corrected and updated the English guide (now Rev1). Please download from the following revised, updated link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/63masmp7hmeron5/Tileproxy_Guide_in_English_Pat_Garret_Rev1.pdf?dl=0 Regards, John G.
  5. Pat, I'm "retired" too and live in USA. I do not speak or write French, but I made an attempt at translating your excellent "Tileproxy - Guide en français" into English. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7zkkktrskevpdmt/Tileproxy_Guide_in_English_Pat_Garret.pdf?dl=0 I used Google Translate on your web page (http://tileproxy.eklablog.com/) to create a Microsoft Word document with the English translation. I did no editing of the English, so it may be somewhat rough. All I did was re-format some of the text to look similar to your French version. I hope this is useful. I will PM you a link to the Microsoft Word English version of your guide in case you want to do more editing of the English version. Regards, John G.
  6. Slowhand is exactly correct with regard to creating your own airports that are correctly placed. I love to fly gliders and like the French Alps for gliding as well as my home area in New England. I have corrected the location of over 60 airports in places I frequently fly so that they match the real-world satellite TileProxy Service1 imagery. I got tired of landing at airports that were sometimes 1km off their correct location (for example, LFLJ Courcheval, France - see pix below). Here are the links to some of these airports I have put in the AVSIM Library: LFLJ Courcheval stock FSX airport LFLJ Courcheval relocated for TileProxy 15 French Alps Airports - FSX with TileProxy New Hampshire & Vermont - 21 Airports Package 25 Central Massachusetts Airports Good luck and enjoy, John G.
  7. I must first say that I run FSX/TileProxy on a Windows 7 PC - sorry... However, I found this series of 4-5 posts that look very promising to get FSX/TileProxy running on a Win 8 PC. At least some folks say they can get TP working on Win 8... It looks like you need to dig deep to get TP to work, but from your attempts, it looks like you are capable... http://www.avsim.com/topic/387919-tileproxy-and-windows-8/?p=2492545 Good luck, John G.
  8. I have, and others have experienced the same problem. I Googled "Yahoo Maps" and found that they have shut down web mapping services - see links below: https://developer.yahoo.com/maps/ https://dl.dropboxus..._01-10-2015.jpg They suggest "using maps from our partner Nokia"? Does anybody know how to modify the ProxyUser.ini [service3] Yahoo Maps to make this work?? The good news is that Bing (service1) has good coverage most places now - and supposedly you can use Google Maps now?? Sorry, John G.
  9. I put TileProxy R086 in the AVSIM and Simviation libraries. I did this because a number of people wanted it and it was no longer available from the original source (via Facebook from Fonchy (https://www.facebook.com/TileproxySpain) and some other links that no longer worked). Other people have claimed TP_R086 has better performance than the original TP_Beta8. I myself have been unable to actually see any performance improvement over the original TP_Beta8 installation. I cannot find a good test benchmark to prove there is an actual improvement?? I have found a good FSX/TP_Beta8 performance improvement by updating my “fsx.cfg” settings using the link below: http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html You may already use this tweaking tool. I found that setting the FPS to Unlimited and using an AffinityMask has made major improvements with my FPS rate and smoothness. I have found that running the “Resource Monitor” gives me a good idea about how effectively FSX is using all CPU cores and the overall CPU load. I am asking anyone who has installed TileProxy_R086 update to please comment on their experience with regard to a performance improvement. Thanks, John G.
  10. Please tell us how you corrected the placement of autogen objects. Will it work with FSX and/or FSX:SE? I have corrected the location of many airports in places I frequently fly so that they match the real-world satellite TileProxy imagery. I got tired of landing at airports that were sometimes 1km off their correct location (for example, LFLJ Courcheval, France - see pix below). Here are the links to some of these airports I have put in the AVSIM Library: LFLJ Courcheval stock FSX airport LFLJ Courcheval relocated for TileProxy 15 French Alps Airports - FSX with TileProxy New Hampshire & Vermont - 21 Airports Package 25 Central Massachusetts Airports I have switched to FSX:SE and find at least double the FPS! Nice... John G.
  11. I Googled the MS/Nokia merger and found this quote - " Here, Nokia's mapping entity, is considered a separate business and isn't included as part of the deal, but Microsoft has agreed to a 10-year licensing agreement. (Additionally, Nokia also retains its Solutions and Networks division, its CTO office and a large number of patents.)" Here is the link: http://www.engadget.com/2014/04/25/microsoft-nokia-merger-details/ It may not come to pass, but it looks like someone could dig into the "Here" mapping service and see if they could replace the Yahoo (Service3) - if it is worth it to anybody? Here is the Flash Earth link to both mapping services: http://www.flashearth.com/ A couple of random checks showed me that they both (Bing and Here) have about the same quality/resolution maps...
  12. Yes, it is still necessary to fix the tileproxy.sys unsigned driver enforcement problem. If you see a DOS screen like this: https://dl.dropboxus...gned_driver.jpg Are you running windows 7? If so, then here is the permanent fix for unsigned drivers from a previous post of mine:: 1. Download dseo13b.exe from here: https://dl.dropboxus...922/dseo13b.exe This is the driver signature enforcement overrider program. 2. Run it - Check Enable Test mode and click next and OK 3. Check Sign a System File and click next and insert a filename. You can copy and paste this : C:\Windows\System32\drivers\tileproxy.sys 4. Click OK and OK 5. Check Exit and click next - Now restart PC and restart TileProxy. That should fix the problem.
  13. Service1 (Bing) is the only one that is fully functional world-wide. Service0 (Norway) works well in Norway - as you might expect...:>). The ProxyUser.ini provided in the R086 download should work and is set for Service1. Be sure you fix the path to the cache_folders that match your cache folder locations, typically set to the following: cache_folder=C:\Microsoft Games\cache.service1 Good luck, John G.
  14. TileProxy_R086 is now available from the AVSIM library. Here is the link: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=tileproxy+R086&CatID=root&Go=Search I will add TileProxy_R086 to the Simviation library today. Enjoy, John G.
  15. I have experienced the same problem. I Googled "Yahoo Maps" and found that they have shut down web mapping services - see links below: https://developer.yahoo.com/maps/ https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/70080922/Yahoo_Map_Service_Shutdown_01-10-2015.jpg They suggest "using maps from our partner Nokia"? Does anybody know how to modify the ProxyUser.ini [service3] Yahoo Maps to make this work??
