How do I overclock?

Featured Replies

Hi,I am getting a new computer next week, its based on a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 motherboard with a i7-2600K cpu.The plan is to first install everything on it, then try to overclock, but I have absolutely no idea how to do this. Can anyone point to a description (website or thread maybe) on how to do this? Most posts here tend to assume that people know what to do, but I have absolutely no idea.Is it something I set up in the bios or some program I run or what?Very basic help would be appreciated :)Helge

It's all set up through the BIOS. Here's a good newbie guide to Sandy Bridge overclocking. The Overclock.net forum also has a whole bunch of good tutorials on the subject. Basically, you're going to increase the CPU multiplier, which is what increases your speed. As you increase the speed of the processor, more voltage (VCore) will be required to maintain stability. You must be careful about how much Vcore you apply, because you can degrade, or even blow up your chip if you go too high. You also want to watch CPU Core temps for the same reason. Different people have different thresholds for what they're comfortable setting, so you'll see lots of different opinions. My personal VCore limit is 1.4V, and I like to keep my load temps in the low to mid 70's.After you overclock, you need to test stability using a program that stresses your system(something like OCCT, or Prime 95). If your system is unstable, your computer will crash, or the test will fail. This is okay, you just need to lower the settings back down, and try again.Good luck with the new system!

Thanks,I will get to reading.Do you recommend installing FSX before overclocking or after? Or doesn't it matter?I planned to do it afterwards to get some performance figures before starting to overclock.Helge

Don't touch any OCing settings until FSX is up and running.
