J41 struggle to climb... Is it normal?

Featured Replies

Hi,I am just enjoying the J41 while waiting for the NGX.I did a flight last night from LEPA to LXGB and I remarked that passing say 15000 feet my J41 was struggling to climb to FL240. I was not using anti ice, EGT kept to the second white dot and I was not able to get a rate of climb better than 300-500FPM.I reduced IAS gradually to maintain a constant mach number all the from FL150 to FL240... Well, is there somthing I am doing wrong or do is it normal for such an aircraft? I guess it would have bben impossible to climb with anti ice on...TAT was -15°C at FL240 so I know it is quite hot and performance are worsen accordingly. But I remember to notice the same behaviour on others flights with not so hot weather.Any advice would be aprreciated.Best regards,Pierre

Hi Pierre, first it's forum rule to sign post with full real name, otherwise your post might get deleted. Now about that climb. What was your take off weight? If it was near to MTOW then it's okay for this plane to have difficulties reaching FL240, especially on a hot summer day, but it should be able to get there anyways. After reaching FL240 it also should be able to accelerate to about 230KIAS.

Hello, Sorry about my name, that's the first time I forgot. The trip was 445NM and I calculate in lbs :200 for taxi1800 for trip400 for alternate800 for final reserve400 for reserve Total 3600 lbsI use the load sheet to load the aircraft close to the MTOW which was aroind 23700 Lbs if I remember well.Is my method of keeping the mach nb constant good? M5.7 is enough?Looking forward for your advice,Pierre Laine

M5.7 is...3266 knots so I think that's more than enough for J41 not only to climb but also to crumble to tiny pieces in the process wink.gif You should use IAS mode to keep 170kts (M0.3) on climb. Sometimes when it's hot and I'm heavy I set IAS to climb on 160kts. If you are taking off at MTOW on hot day, reconsider lower FL for short trip or step climb for longer one.Regards,
