MD-11 ILS Autoland Question

Featured Replies

I read the Swissair London-Zurich tutorial which I try to fly. Everything goes as described except when it comes to landing.Being on the Glide Slope the Green Box appears and I am supposed to get a green "Dual Land" indication and more. But for what ever reason it does not show, instead I get an indication APPR ONLY and this is the end of indications. No align, flare and what have you.Can anybody suggest what I missing and what I have to watch for ? What is the trick ?I greatly appreciate your help, especially from somebody having done that flight/procedure.ThanksHubert Werni

You need to make sure:

  1. The FMS is set correctly and the NAVRAD page is clear of custom frequencies.
  2. The aircraft needs to be flying in PROF and NAV modes.
  3. Remember to arm APPR/LAND on the FCP.

I did the tutorial and found that the runway sugested (or selected) is far too short and I kept running off into the trees even with flaps down, speedbrakes applied, my foot on my hand controller brakes, and just about everything else I could use including my boat anchor that I threw out. So I switched to its adjacent runway RWY 16 which is much longer and it works fine. I also didnt like the last waypoint BLM that causes you to approach the ILS and glidepath at right angles so instead swapped it and I used the waypoint DENEL for the last waypoint before the runway and it leads straight in to ILS glide slope from out about 30 miles. Also turned on those beautiful red squares on the ILS path that shoot up several thousand feet like so many stairs from the runway and watched as my plane glided straight down inside that corrider.

I have the same problem as Robi 77--KENNY, I follow what you said in steps 2 and 3 always, but step 1 has me confused as to what you mean by custom freqs. I always load the ILS freq into the FMS NAVRAD page at the beginning of the flight- Am I doing wrong by doing this-is that why I dont get the green box etc? Carolyn D

1 and 2 arent necessarily true. First, many companies require their flight crews to manually enter the ILS frequencies and courses in the NAV RAD page to ensure that accidental frequency changes dont happen as a result of auto tuning. Manually tuning the ILS will not affect the aircrafts ability to accomplish an autoland. Also, flying NAV and PROF to the approach is a somewhat rare occurance, as most aircraft are vectored to their final approaches, so HDG mode is most normally used.

I found out yesteray shortly after posting my query that manually entering the ILS freq has no bearing on the problem as on my next flight I got the green box OK- then wouldnt you know it- I reran the same exact flight from a save I did halfway through the flight -did everything EXACTLY the same on the approach ,and never got the green box. Now I am treally confused.A review of photos showed as I am decending along the glidepath, I lowered flaps to 28 at IAS of 216- then about a minute later to flaps 50 at IAS 215- then a yellow indication shows what looks like "flap Disag" in a box to the left- in the box where it normally shows the green border I get in WHITE "FLAP" The AP landing was flawless. SO WHA CUD GO WRONG? Carolyn D

In the TO/APPR page, you have to select 50/LAND by LSK 6L if you want to land flaps 50, which is likely why you got the flap disagree and no green box. Typical flap setting for approach is 35, which is the default setting. Sorry for the crappy picture, but you can see what I am talking about. Keep in mind as well that the green box on the E/WD signifies that you have satisfied the requirements for the aircrafts internal landing checklist. It is not related to the aircraft's ability to autoland or any of the FMA status on the PFD. untitled.jpg

Again thanks- I would have posted a png photo of my panel as help but couldnt find anything on this page that would allow me to do so. How does one do so? Carolyn

Go and upload the pics to photobucket or imageshack. Then post the link with the tags around it to the posting here. That should get you going.
