Using old optical drives

Featured Replies

In order to save some money on my new build, I went digging around the house and found an old DVD R/RW drive I bought from some guy years ago that I never installed. It says it was manufactured in 2003. There are no cables or anything with it, I'm not sure if those are provided by the motherboard. Will this still work?

CPU: i7-9700KF stable @ 5.0GHz | MOBO: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero | GPU: ASUS GTX 1080 Ti @ stock | RAM: G. Skill Trident Z 32GB (2x16GB) 3200Mhz | PSU: Corsair RM850x 80 Plus | COOLING: Deepcool Castle 240 AIO | PANEL: 27" @ 1080p

Many new motherboards do not have IDE sockets on them anymore so I imagine that the drive from 2003 didn't have a SATA port either, I ran into the same problem a few days ago when upgrading and I had to go out and buy a new DVD writer with a SATA port, fortunately it only cost me £15 and it burns up to x22 speed too.

Cheers, Andy.

I said "everywhere", not "anytime"! Big%20Grin.gifWere you in the store already or did they just no let you in? Cheers, - jahman.

The town where I live is pretty crappy when it comes to computer stores and it also has a pretty major traffic problem between the hours of 5 and 6 PM (shops close at 6), I got to my nearest store at 10 or 15 minutes before closing and they only had DVD drives and no converters. The drive needed replacing anyway it was over 5 years old and had done a lot of work over that time.

Cheers, Andy.
