Overclocking?(newbie)

Featured Replies

Hi;I'm a complete and utter newbie when it comes to overclocking; I have a pretty decent PC but if there's a way to squeeze even more out of it, I'm keen to learn more about it.I have no idea how to go about this overclocking thing, but first, a very simple question: How much FPS will I gain? I know you'll probably need specs for an exact answer, but I'm typing on a laptop on holiday and don't have me specs with me. All I'm asking is a general idea; are we looking at a gain of 8 or 80 percent? Thanks in advance,

Depends on your specs, yes, some CPU's OC a 20%, some a 50%...

Allright, thanks! When I get home in two weeks I'll really dig in to this

It's not just about the FPS you gain, it's also abiout being able to move your video config sliders further to the rigt and not have your FPS slow to a crawl in scenery-complex airoprts/cities. Cheers, -jahman.

When you overclock your CPU heat up a bit more, get a good cooler don't use the stock cooler.

Is that really a necessity, or an optional measure to be on the safe side?

Necessary. Stock coolers are generally abysmal compared to even a cheap 3rd party cooler.

If you are asking if the a good aftermarket cooler is optional it depends. You can use a stock cooler up to a point when your overclock gets high enough that it generates enough heat that the stock cooler can not disapate anymore heat. At that point you either do not overclock your CPU any higher or you get a better aftermarket cooler that can disapate more heat and you raise your OC even higher. It depends on what CPU you have, but rule of thumb is to not have your core temps go over 80C when stress testing with programs like OCCT, Prime 95 or LinX. A stock cooler would be good for a overclock of around 3.8GHz, above that you need to get a better cooler.

You will need a decent cooler else you can fly down to SiberiaJust%20Kidding.gif Yes it will depend on what CPU do you have your overall system counts. And do not push everything together go step by step and monitor system stability. Everyone says the i5 2500k even after overclocking is still at good temps. So if you have the i5 than there are members here who would definitely help you out.

Allright, thanks for the replies everybody. I'm currently on holiday, but I'll be home in 1 and a half weeks time. Then I'll have my PC, and my specs and really start to dig in to this. Looks like I'll have to save for a couple of weeks/months for a cooler though...:-p

Nah cooler's are not too expensive, you can pick up the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ for probably $35-40 or maybe a bit less. Unless you want to go for liquid cooling they surely would be expensive. Post your system specs for everyone to have a look at it.

yeah, problem is, haven't got my specs with me, and don't know them by heart...I've had a look at some GPU coolers, and some are as cheap as 8 Euros, about 11 dollars; much cheaper then I thought, altough they're probably pretty low quality...

btw I've been looking at overclocking my GPU, but would it be better to OC my CPU?
