I give up on my ATI card

Featured Replies

Hi all, I bought the ATI HD5970 about a year ago and have had issues with it ever since. Why is it the HD5970 gives me terrible frames especially in bad weather when AA is 8x instead of 4x? I am forcing AA through CCC, and as far as I know, this card should be able to handle 8x AAA like a dream. Right now, I am forced to stick with 4x even though it looks terrible. Another issue is that when monitoring GPUs, my GPU#2 is at 0%! Whereas my GPU#1 is doing all the work. This problem does not exist for other games except for FSX. Why? Someone suggested to download xtension crossfire 1.4 but there is no download link anywhere in the interwebs. *pulls hair out* Any help is appreciated. :(

Help? Get rid of that card and buy Nvidia! Very easy... BTW I bought the 6970 DirectCU 2 Gb for 3 screen Eyefinity, and have regrets everything time I load FSX and have to look at the shimmer-show and bad IQ. ATI/AMD/Radeon don´t give any support to a DX9 game like FSX...

FSX will not use two GPU's. I disagree that ATI does not support FSX, I agree that FSX runs pretty well on Nvidia as "I think" Nvidia has less shaders but can handle complex stuff better than ATI. I face no problems on an ATI HTPC card. Do you have the latest CCC 11.7 installed ? How is your PSU ? Eyefinity is a three monitor setup like the matrox cards am I correct ?

Let me repeat: ATI is not for FSX, period! You can come up with all possible, nice, sweet excuses and explanations, but it won´t work, the IQ is horrible! I´ve been there, done that, and ..... Oh, s*** I´m still there! Waiting for MS Flight, maybe it will be different, but I doubt it.

Haha then better get a Nvidia. I did mention that FSX runs better with Nvidia / Intel. Do you have any latest info about MS Flight not the screen shots they don't say anything ? I hope it's a full fledged Sim.

The ATI cards are fine, the problem is FSX: FSX is an old app that only implements shader v. 2.x (stretched to shader v. 3.x with Bojote's mod), while ATI devotes scarce silicon realestate to shader v. 4.x instead. (Shaders are used for clouds, for example.) So the ATI cards are great, just not for FSX. As previous posters said, get nVidia instead (larger chip sze, can afford to grandfather obsolete shader versions?). Cheers, - jahman.

It also helps, in my ATI-user experience, to use the (free) Omega drivers rather than the catalyst ones. You get good drivers plus an interface analogous to the Catalyst Control Centre. http://www.omegadrivers.net/ EDIT: If you do ever switch (or upgrade) drivers, purge all trace of the old drivers before installing new ones.

I got crossfire extension v1.4 from here.http://www.ati-forum.de/allgemein/downloads/tools/1376-ati-crossfire-xtension-v1-4/ Using this software and the built in Crysis profile, I am getting 30 - 70 fps, depending on the area I am flying over. I know crossfire is working because both GPUs are reaching about 68 degrees. Here is my system. Radeon, why? Always go with nVidia.

Nah , for FSX Nvidia performs better.
