STRS question

Featured Replies

This is not a NGX specific question, but I am having a bit of difficulty choosing STARS, even with FS Commander. Why the heck doesn't the last waypoint in a STAR put one in line with the runway? For example, if I choose a STAR for runway ILS 7, why should I then have to choose another waypoint to line up with the runway? After all, if I have chosen a STAR in the list for runwayILS 7, it should be expected that I want to land on runway 7, should it not? Or at least to be put on an intercept course for the runway 7 glideslope? Henri

Stars are only for the arrival. The approach is what will get you lined up with the runway. At the DEP/APP page in the CDU, pick the runway and then the appropriate transition, clear out continuities, and then you should get lined up very nicely with the runway.

If you're talking about US airports it's because stars are generally used only to route traffic to the airport in an organized way. I believe atc generally then vectors you to an approach for the active runway, which varies due to wind & other factors

It often depends on where you fly. Many airports have stars that end at some point, and after that the approach controllers will have to issue vectors to either the visual or an intercept point for your runway. Sometimes there are multiple approach controllers, one that will issue vectors and take you down from a certain altitude and then hand you over to the director which gives you vectors to final approach. Its also quite normal that airports use visual approaches. I recommend learning how to do real visual approaches so that you dont need to use crutches such as an ILS. In the long run you'll enjoy it that much more
