January 1, 200422 yr Last night, while idling time awaiting New Year, I stupidly opened a .gau file with Ms Notepad because I was trying to look inside it. In the process, I turned every single .gau file in FS2004 and indeed every gau file on my PC into a .gau file with a Notepad icon. The classic .gau icon has completely vanished, even when I download ZIP files with .gau files inside themI can still run FS but I am wondering if there is any way I can revert to the classic icon look of the .gau file?Appreciate any posts/advice, thanks!Happy New Year!Arghhhhh!!JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
January 1, 200422 yr Hi!You assigned the *.gau files to notepad. You can access the "always open with" dialog by pressing shift+right mouse click on a gau file. Don't know which to assign to get the "classic icon".Toby Regards, Tobias Kister
January 1, 200422 yr I guess that depends on what you mean by "the classic .gau icon". On my machine there is no icon beyond the default file icon because there is no program associated with .gau. If you want to get it back to that then all you have to do is delete the association of .gau. I can't remember exactly where you look for earlier Windows but on XP you open up an eplorer window and go to the menu. Go to Tools...Then Folder options...A new window opens up. Click the tab that says File Types. Look for an entry for the .gau files and just delete it. Then hit ok.
January 1, 200422 yr OK, chaps:Thanks for the advice. After some fiddling it worked. I had to hit RESTORE in the Folder OptionsFile Types window first and then the option to DELETE the association with Notepad popped up.I feel better now that the gau files now have icons with the normal (default?) appearance. No more file fiddling for me !Happy New Year!JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
January 1, 200422 yr This happened to me a few weeks ago...I must admit it worried me too even tho it actually doesn't alter the functioning of MSFS. I wouldn't let it stop you fiddling though.....you'll be seriously limited if you do...best wishesismet
January 1, 200422 yr Ismet:Hi, thanks for your encouragement. Well, yeah, there's fiddling and then there's.....fiddling. I've fiddled a lot in 7 years with PCs and with FS, but there's still a LOT I don't know at all !JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
January 2, 200422 yr Hi JS,One tip worth remembering - should you make a mistake while working in Windows Explorer don't forget the 'UNDO' button. This has frequently saved me a lot of hassle. Mistakes are easily made particularly if you are like me and tend to rush around within Windows ;)Cheers,Mike
