January 7, 200422 yr I am looking to buy a new version of MSFS. Should I buy 2002pro or 2004? what is the difference? I hope someone can give me some advice.
January 7, 200422 yr If ya are starting from scratch, I'd go for FS2004 -- no question. Having said that, I'm stuck back in FS2002 for several reasons that are not directly related to the differences between the two versions -- other than I have a low end machine and several thousand planes and sceneries many of which can't make the transition.Only limitation for you would be if you had a very old machine. Having said that, if ya aren't used to FS2002 you will find FS2004 a fantastic product -- as there won't be any "old baggage" so to speak from the earlier version-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember what
January 7, 200422 yr Thanks for that. I have used 2002pro for a few months before on a friends machine. It was good. Added loads on (project AI and so on). Will I find 2004 better or worse.I have an Athlon 2600, 1ghz 2700 ram, 128 GF4 graphics. Not sure how that will stack up?
January 7, 200422 yr With that machine, and WinXP, go for FS2004... no doubt in my mind.FS2004 (aka FS9) runs better, looks better, and has more features.Another consideration is that 99% of the new add-ons are written for FS9now, so you would be cutting yourself off from the new, exciting add-on freeware and payware that makes this hobby so great!Go for it! Bert
January 8, 200422 yr Hey Bert, just a "minor" correction in your comment.;)--------------------------------"Another consideration is that 99% of the new add-ons are written for FS9now, so you would be cutting yourself off from the new, exciting add-on freeware and payware that makes this hobby so great!"---------------------------------Actually every new "FS9" aircraft published to date will run in FS2002. Some need a bit of a tweak like swapping out the FS9 airfile for a similar one from FS2002. and usually a switch of the GPS and ya off. Quite a few just "plug and chug."The only area that can get a bit messy is when the developer uses default FS9 gauges in his panel. When that happens you have to get "up close and personal" with the panel.cfg and replacement gauge placement. However, this is the exception rather than the rule. This in no way is meant to suggest the author go with FS2002. In fact, I was the first to recommend FS9 to him. But other folks will read this thread and be pleasently supprised to find they can keep on own loading. new stuff for their old FS2002happy flying!!-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember what
January 8, 200422 yr Remember that AVSIM and other sites also maintain many years of legacy downloads, going back to FS98 and maybe beyond. So, while you may be "cutting yourself off" from the newer downloads, there is no shortage of available material.I'm still with FS2002, partly because of my 1.8G machine, partly because of my large installed base of scenery, AFCADs and traffic, but mostly because of the problems some people are having with FS9. The daily CTD and Autogen posts add to my comfort staying with FS2002, which I'm still adding to and having fun with.Still, if I were starting from scratch I'd get FS9.
January 8, 200422 yr I have a simuilar machine, but with only 512MB RAM. Using a resolution og 1024x768, 32 bit colour, I usually get around 24-28fps, although I do not have all sliders to maximum.
January 8, 200422 yr I have bought it now. Have all sliders to the max and its really smooth. Am running on Windows 2000pro.Thanks for all the advice chaps.
January 8, 200422 yr Author FS9 all the way!!! While some are having some serious problems with FS9, others as myself are not. I have it on 2 rigs, a low end 1 gig (my design PC) and a high end one, runs great (better than FS2002 ever did) on both, although weather will kill your performance.Great visuals and lots of eye candy, and since I am a GA flyer this is a big plus.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://mysite.verizon.net/res052cd/mybannercva1.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmthelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters Best, Michael KDFW
