Quick question about new imac

Featured Replies

For work related reasons, I need to buy an imac, but I still want to keep using FSX and the 737NGX. The model I plan to buy is:

  • 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • 4GB (two 2GB) memory
  • 1TB hard drive
  • AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

Does anyone have experience of the 737NGX on the system above? Would anyone be able to provide me with some benchmarks. I've seen this topic mentioned a few times in the forum and asked a few times myself but I haven't really found a definitive answer. Thanks for reading.

Regards,

Awais Muzaffar

Good luck

Hi Awais,I run FSX on an Imac 3.2GHZ Core2Duo with 4 gigs Ram and an ATI radeon Mobility Hd4670 512MB Card. Your new system is beefier than what I have so you should be able to run it. You may have to convert the texture sizes down to 1024 like I did. Before I did this, I barely was able to run the NGX. I can get acceptable performance now as long as AI and scenery settings, weather etc.. aren't too high. Hope this helps. Your CPU should help though. The problem with Imacs are that you are stuck with what you have. Upgrades???? Forget about it. I am planning on building a new PC. Imacs aren't meant for Flight simulation at the highest levels, that's for sure, yet it can be done within modest limits. I get average 19fps up to 29 with dips to 12 at times, but overall flyable. Not silky smooth as the Sandy Bridge 2500/2600k CPU's. That is my next move when I can. Best regards, Jeff Moss

Good luck
Evidently you know absolutily nothing about macs. I have one and run FSX

Any sealed system with mobile graphics is going to run FSX terribly. There isn't a single fan in the thing! And really!? Mobile graphics with a desktop processor? I'd rather spend the money on a decent laptop which actually has a fan and can be OCd.

I run FSX and NGX on an I7 4-core 8 -thread 3GHz Imac with 8 Gb of memory and a 5450 graphics card, and it runs fine under Bootcamp. I also run FSX and other games on my 3GHz Mac Pro Quad at work, but I have not installed NGX there due to lack of disk space. The only thing to watch out for with an Imac is temperature. I use SMCfan (on the Mac side - when you shift to the PC, the fans will keep the Mac speeds) and double the fan speeds and everything stays cool. without the fan speedup, the temperature goes over 90 C, and the max is 99 and it is recommended to keep it more than 10 to 20 degrees below that. I blew two graphics cards in one week on my previous Imac, and I strongly suspect that it was due to overheating. I have yet to find a PC game that will not run under Bootcamp on a Mac, and I have a LOT of games. Henri
