Motherboard CPU upgrade sanity check before purchase

Featured Replies

Nobody with half a brain is going to by a second hand oc'd chip. You could've been running it at 5GHz 1.45V for the time you had it, practically killing the CPU.
False. Sold my lapped Q9550 for $150 back in January. Granted, I was only able to OC it something like 3.6 because my mobo at the time was worthless.

Nah, the guy actually buys lots of used parts off that forum to build and sell computers. That forum is a fairly safe environment for buying and selling as your required to have 35 reputation points to even sell.

I'd much rather buy a proven good overclocker (be it a CPU or GPU) than just any second hand unit. How do you know the original owner was not running it too hot for long periiods of time even if it was not overclocked?I'm willing to bet that those who overclock and know how to go about it all, will have their temps and voltage in check all the time. So you actually know what you're buying. If I find a seller offering a 2500K OCed to say 4.8GHz 1.35V, on a good cooler and shows me CPU-Z / Core Temp / Prime95 - Linx screenshots, I don't care if it was OCed for 1 or 3 years. It's a deal

eBay, some people are dumb. And as Dazz said, if I put in the post that this CPU can go over 4.5GHz, then if I were in the buyers seat I would buy it. So Dazz, you want my 2500k? I run it at 4.8GHz, 1.35V and done plenty of stress testing to make sure it doesn't crash or go over 70 degrees.

I stand with Dazz - proven overclocker anytime or a new chip. But never a simple non-namer from someone who says never to have overclocked it...

I am kind of nervous I won't get a nice IB chip. I have got a pretty good SB CPU and may have seen the best.

So keep it? Who's forcing you to buy a new one???

No one. Just me, want to upgrade to the latest. Anything to squeeze more out of the CPU intensive FSX.

By the time IB is out, Flight will be almost there

Yes, I hope. That's kind of the point. I have had another acting gig come up and I will probably get about $650 out of that so my finances are alright. If Flight uses SLI, I will put another 570 in it cos that'll be sure to be more powerful than a single 670.Yes, take pictures. also helps if you did something wrong and you can go back through them to see what you did wrong.
