September 6, 201114 yr Author jahman. , I will go check right now. DX10 "preview" IN FSX is NOT checked. So, I am on 9.xx ?? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
September 6, 201114 yr Author It is DirectX 11 per DXDiag ..... I think you found the problem if I cannot use 11 ... I got a new Win7-64 PC a month ago and am still doing setups. So, it must have defaulted to DX11. But, I thought these were backward compatible?? I am not well informed about DX 9 / 10 or 11. Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
September 6, 201114 yr Author FSX does not run DX11. Cheers, - jahman. Many programs may not.My basic FSX is working without error. But, if FSX wants e.g. DX9 will DX11 roll back (be backward compatible)? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
September 6, 201114 yr But, if FSX wants e.g. DX9 will DX11 roll back (be backward compatible)? Not sure what you're asking: FSX can run in either DX9 or DX10, your choice.Video cards do run the previous DX versions for the most part so yes, DX11 cards will run DX10 and DX9. Cheers, - jahman.

Cheers, - jahman. What I am asking is .... am I ok with:My Nvidia card, my PC using DX11 and with FSX DX10 preview unchecked? Or should I uninstall (if possible) DX11 and install DX9? Lets say you have a game that uses DX11 and MSFSX which uses DX9.Can you have both DX versions available on a PC? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
September 6, 201114 yr As stated in the documentation, Bump mapping is enabled by default and a deliberate effort is required to turn it off in the display driver. This requires the use of a third party tweaker. If you haven't done this, it should be on and enabled. Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11, and there's no way (and no reason) to downgrade. Set up a flight with clear weather (the sun makes reflections and bumps more obvious), and set the time to some time after noon (so the sun is at a slight angle). Also make sure Global texture resolution and Aircraft detail settings are maxed out. This is not strictly necessary but the bumps are most apparent at full texture detail. Change the view to look over the wing, and enable slew mode. Slowly rotate the aircraft using the 3 and 1 numpad keys (if it pans your view instead, hit numlock once). As the sun falls on the wing, the bumps should appear, but just like in real life, they're not so visible from every angle as you can see in my shots of the Turbine Duke.. Note that the screenshot in the documentation is taken during a bank, with the sun hitting the top of the wing directly to really make the bumps stand out. -
September 6, 201114 yr Author Thanks for the details.I will do as you said a little later today. "Bump mapping is enabled by default and a deliberate effort is required to turn it off in the display driver"I was trying to find this in my Nvidia driver control panel or Nvidia inspector as I thought the settings may have gotten set to OFF somehow. But, I have not yet found a reference to it for Nvidia. ** I will keep DX11 installed. September 6, 201114 yr Author Ok, JimmiG ..Ryan ... jahman ... Thanks for your help. I see the BUMPs now. Very nice! Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
September 7, 201114 yr Very nice! It's easy to start looking for complex solutions before you've tried the simple things. I also can not find any options related to bump mapping in either the regular Nvidia control panel or Nvidia Inspector, looks like the option has been removed or something. Oh, and DirectX is made to be backwards compatible. You can still play many old games from the 90's that used DirectX 7 or even 6, even if you have DirectX11 and Windows 7 installed. -
