TCAS

Featured Replies

Hello captains, Is this a case of RTFM or a proper issue? I only get traffic on the TCAS when the XPNDR switch is set to 2... Anyone else notice this? Cheers,Mathieu Hampton

My experience is that the TCAS system should display all traffic in the vicitnity; regardless if there is a conflict or not. When XPNDR is set to 2, I get all traffic in the vicinity. On 1, nothing... Only when a conflict arises do RA's occur. Interesting video links, by the way... :)

Transponder should be in TA/RA mode (all the way to the right) and TFC active (when u get the range-rings in the ND). ReagrdsJohnny Holmgren

Hey Johnny, Got all that sorted out... :) I'm wondering if it was coincidence. I'm doing a flight now from GCLP to EHEH. I'll see what happens on the TCAS.

Unfortunately you are not correct. TCAS only displays threats!!!!!!If the model on your aircraft displays "every" a/c then it is not correctly modelled!!vololiberista

TCAS in the NGX can be set to display all traffic in the within a specified range on page 6 of the display options. Or you can set it to "FILTER" to only display what you would normally see on TCAS.

Certainly not. TCAS symbology includes:
  • Other traffic (hollow diamond),
  • Neaby traffic (solid diamond),
  • TA (amber circle) + aural alert,
  • RA (red square) + aural alert + PFD indications.

As said above though, make sure to check out the filtering before you think some traffic is "missing" from the displays. sig.gif

Yeah, like I said, my experience is that traffic within the filtering limits is always displayed... But has anyone else noticed this problem?

In normal operation, TCAS will display all traffic within the selected range, and typically within plus or minus 8000 feet of the aircraft's current altitude. The pilot can choose to prioritize traffic at higher or lower altitudes by selecting "above" or "below" on the control head. I think you may misunderstand the difference between the behavior of the TCAS in "routine" operation, as opposed to the way it acts when a potential collision scenario is detected. When a TA alert is issued, the system does begin blanking out non-threat traffic, and if the closure of the TA target continues to a full RA, then only the RA traffic will be shown - but aside from that, it is perfectly normal to see dozens of aircraft on the display when flying in high-density traffic areas.

In the "unfiltered" mode I get traffic using both XPNDR 1 and 2. In the filtered mode that I normally use, I definitely get traffic on TCAS with XPNDR 2. I'll use the XPNDR 1 setting and keep an eye out ... EDIT: Just verified that XPNDR 1 works too in the filtered mode. Latest hotfix installed.
