Looking for details on how to copy bgl objects from protected area

Featured Replies

I am using ADE 1.47 and Instant Scenery 2 and I am looking for the secret to either adding bgls - like hangars, blastpads, terminal buildings etc from a specific freeware airport to another freeware or default airport for scenery enhancements. I can copy the objects and see them at the new airport but I get a error when I try to place the object (using IS2). Something about the objects being area protected and I am outside that area. I know we can get around this, I just don't know how. Any help. Need very specifec steps or details. Thanks. Ray

.bgl files generally include the object location, unless you are talking about a .bgl file that is a library of models. Placement of objects would normally be .mdl files, which can be placed either with ADE or IS. Your reference to adding bgls confuses me. To relocate an object in a .bgl file would require converting with BGLtoXML, changing the coordinates and then recompiling.

So if I have the mdl file I can simply change the coordinates to my location of choice and use the bgl in my scenery at that new location? Sounds easy enough. Thanks Art Ray

So you can place them in ADE but not with IS? Is that correct. As Art says some objects are in the same bgl file as their placement code. When this happens it is usually either because the objects are location specific or because the developer does not want them used elsewhere. Generally the only way to deal with this is to decompile the bgl file containing the objects and compile them into a new Bgl file without placement code. They can then be used anywhere. With ADE you can use the mdl files directly without having to compile them back into a new library. I assume you are using these for your own purposes only - if you planned to release any work containing re-compiled models then you would need to permission of the developer. If ADE can place them then IS may be being more restrictive in its handling of objects that are in the same Bgl file as their placement code. In that case I would suggest extracting the models from the original Bgl file and re-compiling them into a library Bgl file. I do not think IS can place model (mdl) files so to use these objects with IS you will need to put them into an object library.

Thanks for the post, Jon. Yes, this is just for my personal pleasure only. i don't think the objects in question are intended to be restricted by the freeware developer as he has provided the model files along with the download for aspiring scenery designers to play with. Ray
