October 11, 201114 yr We lost an engine right after takeoff one night going from KMIA to KLAX. We just came back around and landed at 164,000 pounds with around six hours of fuel on board. It really wasn't an issue but at that weight and landing at flaps 15 the right side brakes were smoking after we stopped. The ARFF crews just kept an eye on it and the company sent a tug out to tow us back to the gate.Out of interest, why flap 15? Don't that increase VREF even more than it is anyway due to the high weight?

October 11, 201114 yr Yeah, Flaps 15 is standard for single engine approaches. If you had to go around you would go to flaps 1 instead of flaps 15 like you would on a normal two engine approach with flaps 30 or 40. Tom Landry
October 11, 201114 yr Yeah, Flaps 15 is standard for single engine approachesSorry, I was totally lost. And didn't really think about your having lost an engine, as I of course am aware of the differences in flap settings for engine out condition. I just thought high weight, flap 15 - and didn't quite see the connection to the failed engine. Makes perfect sense, rendering my original question moot.
