October 23, 201114 yr Hi My system is:Asus Rampage II ExtremeIntel i7-920; 2,67GHz OC 3,2GHz (Thermalright Ultimate-120 Extreme)Corsair 6GB, 1600MHz (now at 1200MHz)MSI GTX560-Ti Twin Frozr II 2GD5/OCSSD 120GBMy monitors setup:Matrox THGO2, 3x22" monitors at resulotion 5040x1050 I maybe like to upgrade my computer to a better fsx computer and change the: mainboard, cpu, cooling of the cpu and the RAM! Al depends on:It would great if I can change the cpu and maintain the mainboard! What cpu shuld I have to give FSX the best performance? What cooling solution should I have if I am going to OC to about 4,4GHZ or more? What is the minimum limit so that fsx can run nice and slow? October 23, 201114 yr It would great if I can change the cpu and maintain the mainboard! You are not going to gain much. What cpu shuld I have to give FSX the best performance? 2500K (budget CPU) or 2600K (performance CPU). What cooling solution should I have if I am going to OC to about 4,4GHZ or more? What is the minimum limit so that fsx can run nice and slow? Up to 4.4, good aircooler like Noctua NH-D14. For more corsair watercooling or custom watercooling setup.
October 23, 201114 yr Author The question are:If I am able to gain over my oc of 3,8GHz on the mainboard I have now together with my old i7-920?Or is that better I condering a new cpu with high 3.2GHz and OC it? I am wondering if I can get high enough in oc with my i7-920 like a neq i7/i5 to the 1155 socket? __________________________________________________________________ Computer: Windows 10, 64-bit, Intel i9 - 10850K, Asus Rog MAXIMUS XII HERO (WI-FI), 32GB RAM, Asus RTX3070Game control: Home Cockpit, Keyboard, Saitek Pro Flight X56 Rhino H.O.T.A.S.

It won't bring you the expected performance jump. Going for 3.8 or 4 is MAYBE going give you 15% jump. That's equal to 15 -> 18 fps. I am wondering if I can get high enough in oc with my i7-920 like a neq i7/i5 to the 1155 socket? No way. 920 nor any other 1366 socket CPU can measure with 1155 socket CPUs, 2500/2600K. The new CPU is gonna eat it for breakfast.
October 23, 201114 yr If you're still rocking an i7-920, you have currently have two options:Option 1:Wait until March/April 2012 to upgrade to Ivy Bridge. It's going to be faster and cooler than Sandy Bridge. It should also be farily well timed with the release of nVidia's new Kepler GPUs.Option 2:Upgrade to Sandy Bridge now. You will get 5 or 6 months of enjoyment out of it before Ivy Bridge gets released and quite honestly, you'll be doing just fine even if you don't upgrade to Ivy Bridge. Otherwise, everything you have is compatible, so all you have to do is drop in a new CPU. You will probably still be able to get a decent sum of money for your Sandy Bridge chip. With that said, limit your losses by getting the 2500K instead of the 2600K.Whatever you do, don't pour any more money into a 1366 cpu, motherboard, or triple channel memory. October 25, 201114 yr Author HiFew question:1.)The chip for the new Sandy bridge motherboard are:Intel P67, H67, B65 and Q67!What chip is the best together with FSX and overclocking? In a test was the Intel P67 best for OC: http://www.sweclockers.com/recension/13224-intel-sandy-bridge-core-i7-2600k-core-i5-2500k/2#pagehead2.)I have red that the new Ivy Bridge need less power than the Sandy nees but how about the performance and the OC ability VS to Sandy?3.)Wat RAM do you need if you will OC your new CPU?4.)Wat wattercooler should you buy to the ability to OC to 4,5-5GHz, can you reach a that high with a aircooler?Best Fredrik __________________________________________________________________ Computer: Windows 10, 64-bit, Intel i9 - 10850K, Asus Rog MAXIMUS XII HERO (WI-FI), 32GB RAM, Asus RTX3070Game control: Home Cockpit, Keyboard, Saitek Pro Flight X56 Rhino H.O.T.A.S.
October 25, 201114 yr 1) From those you listed, P68. Otherwise it's follower, Z68.2) Time will tell, no way to know for sure before we all get our hands on new IB chips3) There is no limit on which you would need, only which is recommended for FSX: some say low timing with 1600 is enough, some say 2133 rams... I'd go with fastest you can afford with lowest timings. Quality brand.4) Watercooler - DIY kit or a complete solution? Many reach 5 with aircooling, but temperatures tend to skyrocket. Water ensures basically very temperatures.
October 25, 201114 yr In the interest of future upgrades, I think it would be wise to get one of the gen 3 motherboards that has PCI-E 3.0 functionality. Both ASUS and ASRock has Gen 3 available. Doesn't really matter if it's P67 or Z68. October 25, 201114 yr Author HiI have seen that P67 chippet is the way to go if you will OC:http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1578110 but several of you have Z68 so what are the best chippet, I am little confuse? :)I know that you have told me but I need you opinion!Fredrik __________________________________________________________________ Computer: Windows 10, 64-bit, Intel i9 - 10850K, Asus Rog MAXIMUS XII HERO (WI-FI), 32GB RAM, Asus RTX3070Game control: Home Cockpit, Keyboard, Saitek Pro Flight X56 Rhino H.O.T.A.S.

So, opinion? Doesn't matter.
October 26, 201114 yr Author HiI have red about the power consumption that the i7 920 consume at 2,67GHz 287W?The i5 2500K will consume about 71W at 3,3GHz, does it correct?Fredrik __________________________________________________________________ Computer: Windows 10, 64-bit, Intel i9 - 10850K, Asus Rog MAXIMUS XII HERO (WI-FI), 32GB RAM, Asus RTX3070Game control: Home Cockpit, Keyboard, Saitek Pro Flight X56 Rhino H.O.T.A.S.

That's probably a comparision between the whole system power draw with a 920 vs just the CPU's in the 2500K case
October 27, 201114 yr Author My mistake:) the right for a i5 2500K in load is about 150W vs i7 920 in abou 290 in power consumption!Fredrik __________________________________________________________________ Computer: Windows 10, 64-bit, Intel i9 - 10850K, Asus Rog MAXIMUS XII HERO (WI-FI), 32GB RAM, Asus RTX3070Game control: Home Cockpit, Keyboard, Saitek Pro Flight X56 Rhino H.O.T.A.S.
October 27, 201114 yr With all the knowledge on the forums since the release of these chips, I think you would be crazy to dump $100 into a 2600K as well. Lots of us bought our 2600K on release day, however, when it wasn't necessarily known whether or not they would OC better than the 2500K. Now the 2700K is released and I imagine it's nothing more than a higher binned 2600K. My advice is still to go with the 2500K... unless you do a lot of work with software that benefits from HT.
