Temperature Runaway on descent to TNCM

Featured Replies

Here's one I've never experienced before! Through about 3000 feet to the NW of TNCM today my outside air temperature started climbing uncontrollably until I finally quit ASE and cleared weather through FSUIPC. It got to about 190* C and climbing uncontrollably until I shut it down. I've attached the log file, I note these data points which are likely the cause of the problem.10:32:12 AM:0043 - Sent String: TFFG 121801Z 07909KT 060V120 25SM SCT020 470/464 Q1014 RMK ADVANCED INTERPOLATION RMK SUPPRESSED10:32:12 AM:0134 - Sent Weather: TNCM10:32:12 AM:0435 - Sent String: TQPF 121801Z 07114KT 060V120 25SM SCT022 +RA 1054/1049 Q1014 RMK ADVANCED INTERPOLATION RMK SUPPRESSED10:32:12 AM:0736 - Sent String: TFFJ 121801Z 07602KT 060V120 24 1/4SM SCT033 29/22 Q1014 RMK ADVANCED INTERPOLATION RMK SUPPRESSED10:32:13 AM:0037 - Sent String: TNCE 121700Z 06014KT 9999 FEW022 30/22 Q1014 RMK SUPPRESSEDYou'll note the temperatures at TFFG 470* C and TQPF 1054*C!!! Wow!Now, I pulled the METAR for TQPF from NOAA's AWC and all it gives you is the following as there are not actual METARs available:TQPF 121600Z 1218/1318 07016KT 9999 SCT022 PROB40 TEMPO 1222/1318 0714G24KT SHRA BKN015This is not a METAR, it is a TAF; however, for some reason it is given to the user when querying for a METAR. It seems ASE is interpreting the validity and change times in this TAF as the temperature and this is what is causing the problem. I then guess TFFG is interpolated including this bogus figure and thus the reported temperature of 470! I'm going to try deactivating TQPF as a station and see what happens. I just really wish data like this would be filtered out if it doesn't pass a reasonableness check (IE my thread on barometric pressure problems ;-) )Thanks,Graham BurgoynePSAfter deactivating TQPF I get:10:47:59 AM:0072 - Sent String: TNCM 121800Z 09013KT 9999 SCT018 29/21 Q1014 RMK SUPPRESSED10:47:59 AM:0375 - Sent String: TFFG 121826Z 09007KT 45 3/4SM FEW065 28/21 Q1014 RMK ADVANCED INTERPOLATION RMK SUPPRESSED10:47:59 AM:0599 - Sent DWC to FSUIPC: 90/1310:47:59 AM:0619 - Sent DVC to FSUIPC: 7851410:47:59 AM:0676 - Sent String: TQPF 121826Z 09007KT 45 3/4SM FEW071 28/21 Q1014 RMK ADVANCED INTERPOLATION RMK SUPPRESSEDSo that does prove my theory I think.

Hello, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Can I ask you to contact us via support.hifitechinc.com and create a ticket so we can get this in the system? The details you provided here look good, thank you for that... please forward this accordingly and through the support system we should be able to get this identified and fixed quickly. Thanks Graham!
