November 28, 201114 yr Hi.Seen this in another forum and bit confused. Dedicated flightsimmers often fly full screen in a fixed resolution, yielding an optimal image quality especially in flat-screen monitors. Problem is, most 2D backgrounds are 1024 pixels wide and the related panel.cfg definitions are described in terms of a 1024x768 pixels screen ("size_mm=1024"). If your resolution is different, e.g. 1600x1200, FS will enlarge everything to the window (or the screen) size. However, the background will have the inevitable loss of sharpness because of the enlargement. You can improve this significantly and easily.TIP: Edit the 2D panel background bitmap in a program such as Photoshop or The Gimp, convert to RGB, increase its size to your fullscreen size (e.g. 1600x1200), process it (maybe adding a few details and sharpening) and finally redraw the limit between the panel and the "transparent" view: this will minimize the dreaded panel-border "jaggies". Now Index colours and save. You do not need to modify panel.cfg at all: FS2004 will fill the whole screen with the gauges keeping the original proportions. The new background will also be automatically—and separately—stretched, so that not only it shows your improvements but also, and most importantly, every pixel in the bitmap is now univocally represented by a pixel on screen. The improvement is remarkable and really worth the effort. I have done it for all the aircraft I usually fly I`m running FS9 on a 32" flat screen TV at 1920×1080 resolution. What would I do in this situation?Cheers.Eddie
November 29, 201114 yr You do not need to edit it to your screen's native resolution, since the panel image does not cover the entire screen. And this will do no good at all if you don't run FS at 1920 x 1080 x 32.You *can* edit the image so it is 1080 pixels wide, but again if this is increasing the size of the image without creating an entirely new image, then you are causing the blurriness to occur in the image itself rather than FS causing it - but it will still be blurry.Hope this helps, Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
November 30, 201114 yr Moderator Tom, just FYI the "1080i" or "1080p" is the height of the screen, not the width...So, your 2d bitmap for a native 1920 x 1080 monitor would itself be 1920 x 1080 pixels... ;) Fr. November 30, 201114 yr Hi,Yes, I meant "high", not "wide", sorry. Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
December 5, 201114 yr Commercial Member If you're running in fullscreen mode then you'd need to repaint the panel background bitmaps to 1920x1080 but - and there's a couple of 'buts' here - if you are using a TV rather than a dedicated monitor, the improvement is not likely to be that great as a TV doesn't have the display precision of a monitor. Secondly, my guess (and it is a guess) is that you are possibly referring to the default aircraft rather than third-party addons. The default bitmaps are quite poor (many are unchanged from FS2000) and this combined with the TV is probably what's irritating you. Most third-party addons already have much better panel bitmaps. If you decide to go ahead and try it don't expect miracles because as Tom said, stretching an already poor bitmap will make it worse and tidying up that sort of mess is not easy. Having said all that, if you're anywhere near halfway competent with a good graphics package, it still has to worth a try.-Dai
December 5, 201114 yr Moderator Actually, modern digital flat screen HDTV's with HDMI inputs are every bit as crisp and detailed as a dedicated computer monitor. I use a 42" Toshiba 1080p for my main flightsim monitor... ;) Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
December 6, 201114 yr Author Who is referring to default aircraft?I NEVER use them myself. This thread is too confusing, looks like putting up with stretchy panels.
