December 8, 201114 yr Hello,my original intentions were to upgrade my current RAM, CPU and video card but with my current PC someone said it might not be possible. So someone else suggested RAM drives. My current problems are that I get freezes, CTDs and out of memories. Will the RAM drives fix these and give a better performance or am I better off with a new PC?Thanks Joe Barton
December 8, 201114 yr Would help if you posted your complete specs, including OS, what CTD's you get and your settings + CFG tweaks. The amount of physical RAM doesn't have anything to do with OOM errors, as long as you didn't disable the page file or something
December 8, 201114 yr The amount of physical RAM doesn't have anything to do with OOM errorsHuh?What does cause it then?? and if thats the case why do you have 8gig? ( or anyone else for that matter)Very interested, as i had OOM's, put another 2 gig in and still have them..now i dont know wot to do. Regards Luke M

( or anyone else for that matter)Very interested, as i had OOM's, put another 2 gig in and still have them..now i dont know wot to do.I added 4GB to run virtual machines (4GB for Windows 7, 4GB for Linux), anyway, with current RAM prices there's no reason not to get 2x4GB really8GB (2x4GB)OOM means you're running out of virtual memory, not physical memory. When you run out of physical memory the system starts using the page file to alocate data, which will effect performance but won't trigger OOM'sWhat's your OS? is it 32b or 64b? do you use a high LOD (>4.5) in the fsx.cfg? The later will increase massively the amount of virtual memory in FSX, while the former will determine wether you have 2GB (32b OS) or 4GB (64b OS) of virtual address space available to FSX. Obviously in a 32b OS with a 2GB VAS limit (or 3GB with the "3GB switch") it's easier to get OOM's than in a 64b OS
December 8, 201114 yr Hi DarioIm on 32b, 4 gig installed ram (3.25 used) (64b coming soon :D)I changes my LOD to 5.5, didnt like it, went back to the CFG and it was put back to 4.5 by itself.. ? ( but the effect of 5.5 still remains in the sim)So am i able to 'up' my virtual memory on my 32b system, or will it be useing all that is availible already?( im not to keep on the 3 gig patch)Thanks Regards Luke M

You can use the 3GB switch to make it 3GB for apps and leaving 1GB to the kernelIs it Win 7 32b? If it is, this is how you do it:Open a command prompt as administrator and typebcdedit /set increaseuserva 3072 and press enterBack up your system before doing it
December 8, 201114 yr Hi DarioYes win 7.Are there any side effect to this switch? Its not used soley for fsx. Also, the best way to back the system up? ( 16 gig free on secondary HD and lots of space on external HD)Thanks for advice. Regards Luke M

December 8, 201114 yr Author My specs are windows vista64bit Dual core CPU 2GB RAMMy RAM is the issue for the freezing, it happens when I use the NGX in a dense scenery or using it with FSINN while online Joe Barton
December 8, 201114 yr If you know for a fact it's a RAM issue, go ahead and get more, but a lack of RAM doesn't lead to crashes, just poor performance
December 9, 201114 yr Author If you know for a fact it's a RAM issue, go ahead and get more, but a lack of RAM doesn't lead to crashes, just poor performance but I don`t have as much crashes than freezes so will it still do any good? Joe Barton
December 9, 201114 yr but I don`t have as much crashes than freezes so will it still do any good?No idea. You need to diagnose the problem.Does it happen only in FSX or other applications hang too? only certain A/C? which ones? What's your COMPLETE system? is it overclocked? Any tweaks in FSX or the OS?What COMPLETE FSX settings? have you tried different combinations of setting to see if there's something in particular there that triggers the freezes?Addons? do you get the freezes in some particular areas?

And also when FSinn is used it lags a bit. I suspect its my RAM because its 2GB and fsx is a 32bit app so to over come that I should get more RAM 4 or to be safe 6. Correct me if Im wrong Joe Barton

Correct me if Im wrongTruth is it won't hurt to add some RAM, and it won't cost you too much either. 2GB won't cut it with FSX, NGX, scenery addons, OS... Adding another 2 o 4 GB should definitely help with performance.
