Adjusting cockpit external view ?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know whether it is possible to adjust the sensitivity of the up / down view adjustment in FS9.cfg or panel.cfg ?I find that when using the Shift/Enter and Shift/Backspace to raise / lower the view, the view changes too much at each key press and I would like to adjust the degree of movement in the view.Best regards,Stuart Hyett

I'd also be curious to know if there is a permanent way of reducing the view adjustment increments. Anyone...?Misha

Stuart and Misha,You can change the view in increments by going into the panel.cfg file and finding (or creating if one is lacking) the line VIEW_FORWARD_DIR= as seen in the example of the topmost portion of a panel.cfg below:[Window Titles]Window00=Main PanelWindow01=Radio StackWindow02=GPSWindow03=ThrottleWindow04=Fuel PanelWindow05=Taxi SpeedWindow06=Yoke[VIEWS]VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=3.0, 0.0, 0.0VIEW_FORWARD_ZOOM=0.5[Window00]file=main.bmp size_mm=800window_size_ratio=1.00 position=7visible=1ident=0window_size= 1.000, 1.000window_pos= 0.000, 0.000Increasing the first number (3.0 in the above example, but it could be anything) will raise the seat, decreasing the number will lower it. Experiment until you find what you like.John

Oops! Actually, just above the line VIEW_FORWARD_DIRECT= there should be a heading (VIEWS) but with squared brackets, not parentheses.John

I could be wrong but I don't think that was what he was asking. What you say would require adjustment on every panel he uses and trial and error. The original poster was talking about on-the-fly adjustments in within FS itself using the keyboard commands. To the original poster I don't think there is a way to set the increment those commands change the view. But it always seemed fine to me...I have the commands programmed for my Saitek X45 cursor hat switch on the throttle....I can move my seat up and down and front and back as well as set the zoom factor with combinations of that hat switch and the shift button. Works great. Now what I dislike is the panning in the virtual cockpit with my main hat switch. Once I pan it is almost impossible to get it back perfectly centered due to the way it pans.

Guys and Gals,I also posted my original post on another forum and was advised that adjusting the PAN_RATE=400 to a higher value (maybe 800) will make the increment when using Shift/Enter or Backspace smaller, as well as increase the speed of panning. I havn't tried it yet but thought it worth posting for those interested. On the question of resetting to centred after panning, usually the Del key on the number pad has that effect. Not sure though whether this is configurable within the Keypad settings under Keyboard/Joystick control settings - but it works for me, even after panning around with Active Camera (a great add-on by the way). Thanks for all your suggestions,Best regards,Stuart Hyett

actually, I believe that REDUCING the pan rate value will enable you change the viewpoint in smaller increments. but you've probably already figured that out by now....regards.

Hi Stuart,Since you have Active Camera you can use its default shortcuts (instead of the FS default Shift/Enter and Shift/Backspace to raise / lower the view). Note that the movement is unlimited on Y axis.To adjust the pilot seat height from the virtual cockpit : Pilot view up : CTRL+HOMEPilot view down : CTRL+ENDPilot head up : CTRL+PAGE UPPilot head down : CTRL+PAGE DOWNThis goes faster than the FS default shortcuts but once the height adjusted you can still fine tuning the angle with the mouse wheel for more precision.Best regards,

The "SPACE" key will return the view to front and centre in both 2D and virtual cockpit mode............Tony

Thanks Stuart. The pan rate adjustment is what I was looking for. Will try that later today. For the others, permanently adjusting the pilot seat height is not the solution. Many aircraft (e.g A330/340, MD-11) land with a very high AOA in real life and with proper FDE in the sim as well. Permanently changing the viewpoint either gives you no forward view when taxiing or no view of the real estate when landing. You need to be able to adjust your view as your flight attitude changes.
