December 16, 201114 yr Or what.I went and bought AS2012 because I have OCD, even though I already have ASE and REX. Some of you may have heard me gripe about DWC not being realistic and well, its not. Having spent over 4000 hours in the real skies its just to homogenous of a depiction in most cases as far as cloudscapes go, especially in areas of radiation fog and cold fronts. So I wanted to find out if AS2012 would give me that skyflash stutter ASE gave me in Standard depiction and it looks like they fixed that, hurayy!! One thing I forgot about, and how could I it was another big gripe I had was that there is a smooth and hazy horizon / reduced visibility that usually exists in real life. I just remembered my FSUIPC settings for visibility are unchecked, how could this be? Must be an early christmass present from Hifi. So I would have done a comparison screen shot of KSHN in northwestern Washington state at 50,000 feet between DWC and Standard but it was useless with the small photos upload size so I just posted the one using standard. So right now in KSHN we have much radiation fog, in fact it is LIFR or low IFR with the visibility below 1 mile. In DWC when you got to 3000 feet it cleared up and the stratus "fog" effect it uses was incomplete and you could clearly see the ground, higher up there just was not that much coverage compared to what I am seeing in the Metars and satelite photos. Using Standard was completely different, AS used a complete for the area "fog" stratus" depiction when just getting above 5000(tops there are 1500 but thats whining to much) The visibility cleared up and I exited what seemed to be the FS haze layer but it was not. In other words it was like breaking out of the tops quickly and below was a solid bank of stratus tops. Slewing to 50,000 feet in the ultralight and passing some scattered cu and other random cloud decks yielded this highly realistic weather depiction in the screenshot below. You have good visibility up high but not as good as the default see forever FSX and you can see where it changed the weather all around according to all the metars in the area. Some were reporting VFR,IFR,LIFR and MVFR. All of this is shown in this screenshot.Hopefully the test flights I do will be consistent with this. No screen flashing / stutters in Standard and a naturally hazy look w/o FSUIPC.As far as the clouds go, I went back to REX. It just looks and performed much better for me. REX textures also for some reason give more complete sky coverage it seems. I honestly need to do more experimenting but I still think AS is much better in the weather generating biz. I have only tried the clouds. I let you know how the other textures go. It may turn out we use some from AS and some from REX in the long run..Good Job HIfi! Marc Lynn
December 16, 201114 yr Commercial Member HI,Nice reports, it will take a bit time, for complete depth testing, this requires weeks. For clouds, the resolution at default are set at 1024x1024 not 4096x4096, as for complete sky coverage , this is mostly related to the metar and how As2012 handle it, not the texture, you need to have different metar to acheive this, clouds, shape modeling and formation are related to the metar not texture.Ps:Using 4096x4096 cumulus seem increase a bit more coverage with brokenovercast Kind RegardsChris Willis

December 16, 201114 yr Author I know that it is not the textures per se but using the same resolution textures with REX does seem to give a "fuller" look. But this could also be variability between boots as well. I have noticed some consistency however. I like the stratus depiction much better. I have used the REX engine and it is terrible. What ASE/AS2012 does with REX textures is amazing. You guys seem to streatch those cumulus clouds in varying shapes to look like stratus and it looks good. REX seems to only come with cumulus and cirrus as far as I can tell. Or maybe you use the cirrus themes one on top of each other for lower altitude staratus. Anyway I am rambling again. Great job, all I cared about was Standard mode working and being able to use visibility reduction in this mode as well as fog depiction(because I live in the land of fog). Well worth 35 bucks just for that. Marc Lynn
