Procedure question

Featured Replies

I flew into Quito yesterday performing the RNP 17 approach. Unfortunately i was too fast and high so performed a go around.Although the autopilot flew the procedure ok, the vertical profile ceased to work.Once we were in the holding pattern, i re entered departure and destination, entered the STAR etc and was ready to go.I exited the hold and autopilot showed in magenta V/S but would not allow me to change it. As a result i missed the first 2 altitude restrictions before i took direct control of the vertical speed and continued the approach. Is this normal after performing the Go Around procedure?

Deep in the manuals, I believe there's some information about having to re-enter a cruise altitude into the INIT page after a go-around. Enter the highest altitude you climbed to after the go-around. You probably didn't have ref speeds in the TO/LAND page either for the second approach.

Ah!! Stupid me!! I had altitudes and speeds in the flight plan page and thought this was enough. Many thanks, will keep that in mind.... Not in any hurry to attempt the runway 17 approach in minimum weather again, though! ;)

I think I had done more than 100 hours in the plane before I stumbled across that answer to the same question here on the forums. And by that point I had struggled through numerous second attempts to land on a several flights. Trust me. Don't feel bad.

Many thanks Charles....I performed my best landing on the "Animal" yet at EDDF.....although it brought a couple of newer questions...When I intercepted final for rwy 25C at EDDF, I changed the autopilot from NAV to Heading mode....there was no change of heading...I simply pulled the knob as I had selected the current heading.....if anything, it would have meant a smalll adjustment to the right....to my surprise, the aircraft began a hard turn to the left!! I moved the heading bug 5 degrees further to the right and pulled on the knob again....the turn was maintained....I then went to the MCDU and chose DIRECT TO the next waypoint, and re-selected NAV and presto....the aircraft reversed the turn and flew back to track....no idea why!A last question....I prefer to turn off the F/O displays to save on some FPS....but when I turn them off, my Systems and Config display jumps to my ND display....is there a way to display the SD in another Display Unit???

Will,If the turn was over 180 degrees it will make the shortest turn, ie for you the wrong way. When you turn the heading knob make sure it won't go over the 180 degrees and adjust it when your halve way to the right heading.BTW, you will never make a longer turn on Quito then 180 degrees if you follow the Approach chart.Cheers,John

Hi John, no, there was NO turn....the heading bug was set to follow the NAV track, it should have continued straight ahead....it started a left turn as soon as I selected heading mode.....I moved the heading bug to the left to match the turn the aircraft was doing and see if I could "recapture" the aircraft but to no avail....I then moved the heading selector to the right and pulled the heading knob, nothing....I then selected "DIRECT TO" in the MCDU and selected NAV....and bingo, it reversed its turn....very bizarre! The turn was not in Quito, it was in Frankfurt (EDDF)....had it been in Quito I probably would have "kissed' a mountain!

Yep, not a thing you want to happen in Quito.Anyway, I don't understand what was going on but something did go wrong with the heading knob. When you pull it it should go to the heading given (other then the present heading). You push it to continue the present heading.Cheers,John
