January 15, 201214 yr http://www.break.com...-tarmac-2286662Notice in the bottom left corner, just behind the baggage cart, debris landing. The right nose wheel tire exploded. This is not uncommon. Many years ago, when the internal belts of auto and aircraft tires were made of various fabrics ( nylon, rayon, polyester etc.) the tires made good insulators against lightning. Now that almost all tires have steel belts, the current flow travels right from the wheel hub, through the belts to ground, which causes the immediate failure of the tire sidewall.Last summer lightning struck a Ford Explorer SUV, parked just down the street from my house. In the old days, the bolt would have jumped from the frame to ground... In this case, it blew all four tires right off, and left the vehicle sitting on the wheel rims!
