February 6, 201214 yr My PSU is hot when I run FS9 with my new video card in it. Even in the past it ran hot (well warm-hot) with the 8800GS. (MY PSU is rated around 400 or 500W.)I am wondering is it possible to use an old PSU I have that is rated at 200W to use specifically for the 550, or is that not enough power for it?I see my choices as either using a second PSU as mentioned above, outside my case, or putting my old card back in, or just getting a new PSU between 550W-850W of which I don't really have any cash for.Do some PSUs naturally run hot? Or does it just mean they are the most average ones made. Getting a higher quality PSU will make a difference?Daniel

February 6, 201214 yr 200W will be plenty if it only powers the 550.Sorry Ben, not true.Daniel, you have got to be careful! 400W is a minimum suggested for the 550. Your current PSU is hot because it's so taxed.Edit: I see. As a secondary PSU. Somehow I skipped that line. Yeah, Ben's right. That'll do.I suggest getting a PSU like the OCZ ModXtreme 700W. Decent PSU, good price. February 6, 201214 yr Sorry Ben, not true.FOR a SINGLE GTX550ti?? He is powering the 550TI ALONE. 200W is more than enough just for the GPU.
February 6, 201214 yr Thanks guys for the heads up.With an ATX PSU out of the case does it turn on with the ON/OFF switch or do I need to jumper it somehow to an old M/B or switch?Daniel
February 7, 201214 yr Moderator I'd be extremely wary about trying something like that. Keep in mind that some of the voltages are supplied via the PCIe rails. And no, you would need to hardwire a separate on/off switch for the external PSU. Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

February 7, 201214 yr You can shortcut the 16th green connector with one of the black (ground) ones with a paperclip or something like that, but then you would need to manually switch that PSU on an off every time, and you would be bypassing the "Power OK" and mobo's voltage protections for that PSU, so more risk of damaging componentshttp://pinouts.ru/Power/atx_v2_pinout.shtml
February 7, 201214 yr Thanks Dario!I think until I understand the changes I won't be taking the risks. But this is proving educational to say the least.Daniel
