Having a REALLY strange problem

Featured Replies

I am getting random bsods but thats not the problem exactly. When it restarts it can't find my boot drive which is my ssd. When I go into the bios on restart(not shutdown), I believe it doesn't see the ssd either (I checked once but I can't remember). But when I shut down the computer and reboot the ssd is there but is now in the number 3 slot for boot order. I believe I am getting the bsods because the computer is forgetting that a drive exists on that port. The only cause I can think of is that we had a power surge like 2 weeks ago that took out most of the electronics in our washing machine and maybe the surge caused some damage to the motherboard. What do you guys think? Its only happen 4 times 2 on the day the surge happened and 2 today and one of the times was when the surge happened.I am assuming either the ssd or the motherboard

Da BestIn the BIOS there may be something like fail safe defaults - selecting that would be my first step.Make sure the BIOS is up to date.Secondly you need to change the boot order so that the SSD is the first boot drive.Doesn't that mobo have an easy set up for the BIOS eg drag and drop for priority?Ther should be an app called MEM OK - have you run that?If you solve it with the above but are still getting BSOD's suspect hardware.RegardsPeterH

I guess I can try updating the bios although not sure if thats the problem. Here is the problem with the boot order, the bios forgets my ssd even exists so it uses another drive to boot too which I use for backup so there is no windows installed on it. I have to shut the computer off, go into bios and reset the ssd to the 1st spot. I have been using this ssd with this windows install since Mid December and I've only started to have this problem since we had the power surge that took our washer out.Maybe my power supply is screwed up... I noticed the other day the led light in my top fan was not constant.

TaylorYour BIOS may be corrupt that's why I suggested something like a "Fail Safe" if that doesn't work after setting your SSD as the boot drive then you may need to update the BIOS. But first you may need to reset it! If the BIOS cannot retain the SSD as the boot drive then to me it shows that there could be an issue in the BIOS and it may need resetting - that's the first thing to try.I guess that you checked and rechecked the cables for the HDD. You say this is in the 3rd slot in BIOS priority order what is in 1 and 2?Try swapping the SATA cable over to another to see if that works.Yes you may be correct the PSU would be the first to fail if you had a power surge - mine certainly did but I couldn't start the computer at all.If you can get the BIOS to retain its settings then we can go from there.RegardsPeterH

I really hope its just a bios being corrupt. I can boot to my ssd by the way but when I get this bsod the motherboard forgets my ssd exists. I have to shut down for it too see it and then it works just fine until it happens again after I move the ssd back to the first spot.I will for sure take screen shots next time to help. I wish I knew how to trigger the bsod but it's just so random.

Sounds like you have some kind of hardware failure.

It would seem so although last week I had my computer running 3 and half days straight without a hitch. So whatever it is, it likes to randomly happen.

Have you tested different GPU drivers?

I mean I could try that but not sure if that's the problem. The fact that I am not seeing my ssd in the bios when it happens means its either hardware or bios issue.

Darn.... I'm not sure what to say...Maybe try plugging in the SSD to another SATA port on your mobo?

What Firmware version do you have in that Agility 3? SATA III SSD's with a Sandforce 2281 controller (OCZ Vertex 3, Agility 3, Solid 3, Corsair Force 3, AData S510, S511...) have been doing that from the word go.For a SATA III SSD, better go with one with a Marvell controller like the Crucial M4 or the Samsung 830

2.11 I think

Check/update your firmware with this toolCurrent is 2.15If you want, upload your mini dumps so I can check what's crashing

Where do I find the dumps? Ya I saw that tool.

If you have Win 7 configured to store them, they shoud be at C:/Windows/Minidump
