Performance of the Icon?

Featured Replies

Spent about an hour yesterday exploring Flight. I like a lot of things and miss some things. Doing one of the landing challenges I did a sideslip which for ones actually felt lifelike. Better sound effects perhaps? I fly a light taildragger IRL and the increase in wind noise is considerable when sideslipping.Anyway, I did one mission, I think it was called "100$ Hamburger" where you take one passenger from one airport to another. I did this in the Icon and had huge problems getting off the ground and into the air.I used the checklist system (one of the things I like) so trim was set for takeoff. I assume that weather/temperature and such in a scripted mission should be set to not cause performance problems. The main thing I can think of was being too heavy. I suspect that the fuel load defaults to full and that one may need to reduce it? Unfortunately I didn´t have time to try this before the Mrs yanked me away from the computer. Just wanted to see if anyone else has noticed similar behaviour?

What altitude were you at?I was trying the same mission, crashed probably 8 times trying to get up over some trees. (One time I even got up and then stalled and slid down the side of a mountain without hitting trees with the landing gear out and was able to take off again, then crashed.)I was on multiplayer and a person told me that the Icon really pitters out around 7.5k-8k so to try the mission at a lower elevation. I ended up having to do a major detour from that airport to be able to complete the mission but staying around 6k it wasn't too bad.

Having a car is part of the problem here...We top the tanks... stuff the trunk full... and load as many people that can (comfortably) fit inside.GA aircraft are not like that or typically do not have that ability. A four place plane may be just good for 2 or 3, half fuel and some small bags.Take a Piper Warrior for example... 800lb useful load... 3 x 200lb people, fill the tanks to the tabs (that's only 17gal a side... not the full 50gal) and now you are at or even maybe a smidge over gross for a couple hours of (legal) flying.Add to that an 80° to 90° day (high density altitude) and that Warrior will be climbing like a proverbial slug... which obviously gets much worse the higher you climbThe Icon holds what... 20gal of fuel... so that's 120lbs and let's say 500lb useful load (I do not know specifically but that should be ballpark)... So with 2 x 190lbs you are at gross weight. Again add in the hot / humid air (humidity hurts engine performance? can't remember off hand... pretty sure it hurts performance) but the heat is the big killer... plus if you have to climb much... all totals up to some not so hot performance. That is why I typically don't notice that stuff, because I have had those concepts pounded into my tiny cranium. And to combat it, I never take more than half fuel and more like a third to get better performance. Don't have to worry about FAR minimum fuel requirements so I just take what I think I'll need and a smidge more.

I was a bit disappointed with the A5's performance too.I was doing a $100 Hamburger mission and had to double the length of my route since I had to go around the mountain rather than over it.

Watch your fuel load! When your on the runway, hit F to check your fuel load and weight. Im sure your in the red. Try to drop as much fuel as you can to keep things light. Remember, your flying an LSA. Its only got 100HP!!! With a passanger and full fuel, you may be way over the weight limit for that aircraft.

Yeah, fuel load seems to be the culprit. Can´t remember seeing any red indications when I´ve looked at the fuel/load display though. OTOH I´m not sure if I checked that in this particular mission, so adding a pax could, and most likely does, put me in the red. Kevin, when you say "red" do you mean that as a general term or have you seen overweight warnings in the fuel/load display?Rob, all true. I fly small two seaters IRL and myself+one pax+full fuel is a no go :) Guess this game is a sim after all :D :D

I will have to try removing some fuel then haha.... Now when you press F for fuel does it pop up a slider or how do you adjust it after the fact?

When on the runway and stopped, hit F. That will bring up the fuel menu. The top slider is the range reading. Shows you the range you will get with the set fuel load. The bottom slider is the WEIGHT slider. On the far right of the weight slider is a white line. Going past that white line will turn the weight line RED. Thats the danger zone. In some cargo missions you will NOT be able to drop enough fuel to make it past the white line and keep enough range for the mission, so you must take off heavy. ITS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO! Flying "heavy" is very interesting in Flight. Your aircraft really feels like its going to just drop out of the sky. If you dont bank properly, IT WILL.Again, this is something that Flight simulates SO MUCH BETTER then FSX (IMO). I have a little time in light GSA aircraft, and im a heavy guy. They really REALLY do feel like they will just fall out from under you at any moment once you get slow. So you really need to work your stick on takeoff or landing to stay alive. Its simply amazing how Flight can make me feel that the aircraft is heavy!

Man is it horrible if I just want to head home and start playing some more instead of doing my job? hah hah. I've been on htis form all of 2 hours and have learned quite a lot already. Woo!

Yes sry I forgot that sir (the flying taildraggers "oh he's going to know this already") while all wrapped up in my explanation then posted and saw again... my mistake for the extra blah blah blah.

Welcome to the world of flight simming! You never learn EVERYTHING. You always want more! P.S. I ride a Suzuki DL650. Had it since 06 and LOVE it. Keep the shiny side up!

Rob, I absolutely do not take any offense from that! Your explanation is very good and doubtless of use to a lot of people. In fact, there are a number of RL pilots that forget/neglect such things with sometimes fatal results.

now I want to go back and try this mission in the Icon! I was flying the RV at the time so didn't have to worry about it...
