March 3, 201214 yr Enjoying this immensly, I am an avid simmer in FSX, Mainly VFR so I want to discuss Flight, the land challenges in RV-6 impressed me and I enjoyed the ILS landings but I find it hard as it seems im constantly fighting with the needles. When I intercept the localizer and turn to a heading of 24 for runway 24 with visability at less than 100ft in challenge 6 in the RV-6. It seems the centerline needle doesnt automatically adjust to say im right, heading 24 etc. It shows either left or right bank is needed to centerline. So i either bank left or right so I'm on course and the needle constantly tells me to either bank left or right and im fighting with it constantly and when I get down to 100ft and see the runaway I realise I'm quite a bit off, enough to adjust it drastically but at least 50ft left or right of the centerline (no where near the runaway)I'm a complete ILS newb as in FSX I was always VFR. Am I doing it right? :P
March 3, 201214 yr Do you talk about Flight Director or about Localizer deviation bar, Im not sure from your post. Also, there is problem you really do not know wind direction and speed precisely, so you have to guesstimate it and apply correction. March 3, 201214 yr Author VOR/Localizer is what im on about. This: http://www.theriteshop.com/shop/media/ecom/prodsm/TBR000047.jpgApply what sort of correction? I was constantly banking left to right, to left to right and so on in a battle with the needle to stay center.
March 3, 201214 yr Ok, that are deviation bars.So to be clear, if there is no crosswind, you should just align needles at center and follow rwy heading. Do not chase needles, thats bad habit. You see that horizontal dots? When you fly ILS each dot represent 0.5 degrees off localizer and that is not too big error, so you need only slight changes. Use micro inputs every second or so to correct your attitude and thats enough. Glide slope is even more sensitive so one dot is 0.35 of 1 degree or so, its not big deal if you are not in dead center, anyway you will continue visually as soon as you see the rwy.If there is crosswind, you will feel it for sure as it will drift you from localizer. Unfortunately there is no information about wind in flight! (someone said simulation.. eh...) so you have to feel it and move your heading a little bit into wind in order to stay on localizer. Without exact wind info that would be trial and error. March 3, 201214 yr are winds aloft being modeled the same as ground winds - as in direction and velocity? The HUD display at top has a wind indicator on the left. However, it doesn't always show it, which I've been too lazy to look into as to why...

March 3, 201214 yr The trick (that helped me get gold on the RV landing challenges 5 and 6) is to not only look at the ILS needles, but also at the compass. The information onscreen says what the heading of the runway is. Now when the localizer needle is in the exact middle that does NOT mean you are flying on the right heading! It ONLY means that your plane is positioned RIGHT before the runway BUT it may well be heading in another direction!So... when the needle is in the middle, check the compass to see of your heading is the runway heading. If you see the heading is to the left, you can be sure the needle will be moving to the right within no time. And the other way around. If the needle is in the middle and the compass shows the runway heading, that means your plane is positioned in front if the runway AND you are heading in the right direction! You will still have to correct your heading (constantly) but try to think ahead: when the localizer needle is in the middle but you see the heading is moving towards the right, you KNOW that within a short time the needle will start to move off centre (to the left). So before the needle moves, make small corrections to your heading to stay on track. So do not simply chase the needles, but also look at the compass and use the information of BOTH to get you to the runway.BTW I did get gold on 5 and 6 but that doesn't mean I had a perfect appraoch: it only means I had a good landing... because both times I was lucky enough to see the runway lights through the fog and both times I was to far to the right or the left. Luckily I had time enough to simply point my plane towards the lights and land on visuals... Edited March 3, 201214 yr by J van E
